I’ve eaten at his restaurant in Columbia, SC a few times on my way to VA.

About a third of the folks in there were black.

They have good chow, the NAACP doesn’t.

"Bessinger refused to serve blacks at his restaurant until 1976 when the U.S. Supreme Court stepped in..."

I assume you ate their sometime after 1976.

That’s a great point that the “civic leaders” like the NAACP always miss. The few times I went in one of Maurice’s restaurants when I lived in Columbia, the crowd was racially mixed and so was the staff. The only people that seemed to think the flag out front was a big deal were the Jesse and Al Traveling Minstrel Show, and the professional race pimp crowd like Joe Darby, Darrell Jackson, and the local NAACP.

The food at Maurice’s wasn’t bad, although to be honest, I’m not *that* big a BBQ guy—I grew up in Virginia, where it’s not as much of a religion as it is in NC and SC. I always liked the hamburgers at Rush’s, which is a local Columbia-area fast-food chain with really good food. Or the meat-and-three at Lizard’s Thicket.
