DOVER, Del. - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day. A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

Where’s the Nitwitness Action Live News Team?

Home in bed, mostly. No newsroom retains full staffing at 1 in the morning just in case someone gets shot.

I was called in when the Quecreek miners were rescued. I told my boss that I was capable of doing my job but Id just come back from a night out, and I shouldn't drive. I was willing to take a cab, but he tppk a pas and called someone else.

I was cold sober when we got the news -- later proven erroneous -- that the Sago miners had been rescued alive. So I drove in, only to learn that the error had been corrected by the time I arrived, and all but one were dead.

The university said it is implementing a plan to provide essential services to people living on campus who are being told to stay in their rooms.

Essential services? Keep the power and running water on. In my experience, dorm rooms have a pretty decent stock of food; at most, chuck 'em a jar of peanut butter, a few packs of Ramen and a case of beer.

Non-essential personnel are being told not to report to work.”

Just wondering - why do they hire so many "non-essential" personnel?

Shooter still on the loose.

This is less than 10 minutes from my house.

Also race weekend so a few extra thousand people are (already) in town. With more coming tomorrow and Sunday.

Normally there is not much “news” coming from Dover, but it’s NASCAR week there, so the entire town is teeming with the national press corps.

And with DelState directly across from Dover Downs, this has got to be a worst case scneario nightmare for DoverPD.

Jeez, and all the news trucks are in Vegas and Miami so who is around to cover REAL news when it happens?

This is NASCAR week in Dover..........the campus is directly across the highway from Dover Downs International Spweedway -- plenty of news coverage.

Three university students were slain Aug. 4 in a Newark schoolyard.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......now I don’t remember anything about that incident in the MSM. Wonder if they are going to try and keep this shooting OUT OF THE MSM this time also?

Interestingly enough, the 3 students shot in Newark last month, were students at DSU.

LOL!

I’m trying to envision play-by-play sportscasters covering a shooting/man-hunt.

Believe me, there are far fewer “play-by-play sprotscasters” in Dover for race week than there are”news news” people. The whole town becomes a zoo this week.

I think the professors would be non-essential personnel.
