Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

” This hurricane is reminding me alot of Andrew. We all remember what it did to S. Florida. Jamaicans are going to need our prayers. “

I’m having a senior moment, here — trying to remember the name of that storm a few years back that ping-ponged back and forth along the gulf for what seemed like the longest time....

(Also trying to figure out why that particular storm keeps coming back to my mind...)

Yesterda afternoon I was in the Pasadena TX Lowes getting a 3 2X4’s. I had to replaced 2 a “borrowed” from my hurricane boarding up wood for a project. They were out of generators and almost out of gas cans. The clerk told me plywood and such was flying out the door all day. Any TX Freepers if you do not have what you need to bugout or bunker down do not wait get it now.

Yup, got the last 6 cans from walmart yesterday. Those that have a ‘wait and see attitude’ could wind up with a ‘where did everything go’ lament.

When Gov Perry initially announced mobilization the other day, Texas was definitely in the crosshairs. Much less likely now, although they are waterlogged, and additional flooding is a very real possibility.

The latest update shows the new track to be a bit further south?

Looks to be going right between bouys 42057 and 42056.

The track has shifted southward. Prior to that, the forecast track literally dissected Jamaica from east to west.

I got ten 5 gallon cans full plus boat holds a 100 gallons and it is full, just in case I need to siphon some. Also put in a spare window unit, my generator won’t run my central A/C.

Hm, sorry about that.

Bouys 42058 & 42057 are out of service. 42056 is working but it will take the storm a while to move closer to it.

Buoy 42058 failed back in May. It was on the schedule to be repaired this month. Maybe next week...
