The problem is the Quran is viewed by Islam as the Uncreated Word of God. Therefore, it prohibits anything but a rigorist interpretation. The idea of allegorical understanding of scripture, part of the heritage of Judaism and Christianity and seeking truth by questioning God, is unknown in Islam. That's what has led to the violent Salafist ideology taking root. It not only considers Muslims who seek a moderate approach to their faith to be apostates, it also views as enemies rigorist Muslims outside the Salafist orbit - e.g, the Shiites. And of course, it regards Jews and Christians as the infidel, the ultimate enemy to be killed or subjugated under Islamic suzerainty. It will be a very long time before Salafist Islamism and it Khomeinite variant in Shia Islam are defeated.

Many Muslims I hve seen in the media and elsewhere interpret ethe Koran just that way. Frank Gaffney made a film about them and nobody will run it.
