Tancredo wins applause at NAACP
Boston Globe ^ | Thursday, July 12, 2007 | Scott Helman

DETROIT -- As Susan Milligan noted in today's Globe, Republican presidential hopefuls have largely shied away from appearing before organizations and groups deemed to have a liberal slant. But don't tell that to US Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado, the lone GOP candidate to appear this morning at the NAACP's annual convention in Detroit.

After he came out, Tancredo wandered around the empty stage, not knowing which podium to use. "Oh, right here?" he said when led to the center lectern. "Oh my gosh, this is amazing."

"Do you think we should wait a few minutes to see if these other guys show up?" Tancredo said, drawing a big laugh from the crowd. "Do they know something I don't know, is that it? I think actually I know something that they don't know."

That line drew a loud cheer from the audience, clearly appreciative that Tancredo had bothered to show up. He used his opening remarks to talk about his signature issue, illegal immigration, and how it was hurting American workers, and especially African-American workers. Tancredo said he gets "insulted" every time he hears that illegal immigrants are working jobs American citizens won't take.

"I've done those jobs, you've done those jobs, our kids have done those jobs," he said.

What they say about Fred is what they used to say about Bush. It is also what they used to say about Arnold S. It goes on and on. Meanwhile these “moderate” republicans keep leading us down the socialist globalist plantation.

Umm, I don’t think that was the reporter’s remark, i.e. it isn’t in the article.

Reporter did not want to admit that blacks are as equally repulsed about illegal alien amnesty as Tancredo is.

Whoopee! That is because they think they will have to share the entitlement pie with them.

I disagree. We shouldn't be afraid of taking on liberals. The other candidates missed the chance to bring conservative philosophy to them. Like I said, its time to go on the offense!

Ouch. I’m not above making typos (often), but I usually don’t screw up that bad. Got pinged back to my post and that’s embarrasing to reread. LOL

I agree. Tancredo didn’t pander. That’s to his credit. he didn’t pander and he didn’t give a lame excuse why he couldn’t attend.

Thanks. I kind of assumed he supported them, but wasn’t sure. he has an abrasive personality, sometimes justified, sometimes not, but my impression is that he is usually firmly in the conservative camp on issues.

I really don’t know why republicans don’t make school vouchers a bigger election issue. It could define them the way funding for failing schools is used by the Dems every cycle.

“Fred will make a good Atty General in the Tancredo Administration”

If you actually think Tom Tancredo will win the Presidency, I’ll make a very large cash wager with you. But I think you know better.

And the fact that your candidate went to kiss the ass of a race-based group of socialists isn’t something to be proud of.

I’m curious. What did TT say that took the NAACP on? The article describes how he made them laugh. Did they miss the meat of the story? I wouldn’t be surprised, but I’d like to know exactly what he said that took them on.

Tancredo never expected to get this far. He's always stated that his run is to keep the issues in the spotlight and the BS to a minimum. Mission accomplished. I dare say he's probably more surprised by the groundswell of grassroots support than anyone (because the guy I met three years back was so humble as to laugh off my encouragement).

And the fact that your candidate went to kiss the ass of a race-based group of socialists isn’t something to be proud of.

When the President has consistently refused invitations to speak to the NAACP he effectively said through this that he either disrespected them or feared them - not qualities a proper leader should display. Tom saw this as an opportunity to further his message and the novelty of being the lone R candidate to show up was, flatly, BRILLIANT.

It's no secret that America's black population has been wising up to their primary lobby group being stooges for a party consistent for ignoring them. Those Americans are also aware of their formally powerful card being called as old issues have been resolved and a new "needy" are threatening their newfound sense of investment - especially loathsome as half of that group DON'T BELONG HERE and don't have the "cred" of being here because their ancestors were captured and dragged here.

What presidential candidates or candidates do you believe would make a good president?

I like Fred, Mitt, and Rudy is still a possibity. All of support the War and say they will not raise taxes. I feel that the first one of these three that is smart enough to make the border his issue is going win it all. Like Hunter a lot but, he ain`t going to beat Hillorat I`m afraid.

Not the question. Any of the republican candidates are far and away better than any of the democrat candidates. It’s a question of who can win...and that ain’t Tancredo.
