:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

“here was the RUMINT that a series of terror attacks would begin in Europe and work their way towards the US”

Yes, I recall this and always look at European terror attacks as a possible set up for something large here. I suspect the terrorists really wanted to do so before now but have been interrupted repeatedly. Like those raptors in Jurassic Park, they will continue to attack.

Possible security breach at St. Anthony airport probed (Canada)
Tuesday, July 3, 2007

Transport Canada is investigating a report of an alleged security breach at a small airport in northern Newfoundland. An employee at the St. Anthony airport reported an incident last week in which an unidentified vehicle drove on to the main apron of the airport without going through security, said Maurice Landry, a communications officer with the federal department.

"An individual then boarded a Provincial Airlines commercial flight to St. John's with what appeared to be unscreened baggage," Landry told CBC News. "According to report that we have, it appears that the individual boarded the aircraft without any opposition."

The report was made by an employee of NAV Canada, the agency that operates Canada's civil air navigation service. The employee works in the airport's air traffic control tower. Landry said if the report proves to be true, the incident breaks security regulations governing air travel, which dictate that all passengers and baggage be screened before being allowed on a commercial flight.

Ottawa police destroy suspicious packages
Tue Jul 3, 2007

OTTAWA - Police said on Tuesday they destroyed two suspicious packages found overnight outside the Department of Defense in Ottawa.

The packages were detected late Monday and police closed off the area for several hours before declaring it safe at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Ottawa Police Service said in a statement. The incident is now under investigation. No further details were immediately available.

The Conservative government has come under increasing criticism for Canada's military presence in Afghanistan, where it has lost 60 soldiers since troops were deployed in 2002.

Dozens of radioactive devices have been lost or stolen in Canada since 9-11
Tuesday, July 3, 2007

OTTAWA - At least 76 radioactive devices - several of which could be used in a terrorist attack - have gone missing in Canada over the last five years, newly compiled figures show.

They're stolen from cars, disappear from construction sites, fall off trucks and generally go astray at an alarming pace. The Canadian Press has compiled a database showing the rate at which these widely used devices vanish, often for days, sometimes without a trace. It chronicles dozens of thefts and mishaps involving hazardous equipment employed daily in tasks ranging from oil-well measurements to pioneering medical research. Thirty-five of these were nabbed by thieves. Three others were found in a roadside ditch, a garbage landfill and a farmer's field. And at last count dozens were still missing.

The eye-opening data emerge as anti-terrorism experts warn it's a matter of when - not if - readily available material will be used to craft a crude radioactive explosion, or dirty bomb, that could sow panic and cost billions of dollars to clean up.

'Gas Canister' Pair Held In Terror Probe
Tuesday July 03, 2007

Two men are being questioned by detectives after they were arrested apparently trying to collect a large delivery of gas canisters.

Officer stands guard at unitThe two Asian men, who have not been named, are thought to be aged in their 30s or 40s. They were arrested at an industrial estate in Blackburn, Lancashire. Lancashire Constabulary said it was too early to confirm whether the arrests were linked to the recent bomb plots in Glasgow and London.

Police swooped after 10 propane gas canisters were delivered to an industrial unit on Birley Street, on the Furthergate Industrial Estate. Eyewitnesses reported that a delivery driver arrived at the gate to Unit One with around five canisters and the two men appeared shortly after 10.45am.

An unmarked police Ford Focus carrying two officers immediately pulled up and the men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. The terror suspects were detained and around half an hour later a second consignment of around five canisters arrived at the premises. Police tried to enter the premises but did not appear to be able to open the shutter door with any of the keys in the men's possession.

The unit is on a small industrial estate just outside of Blackburn town centre. The building at the centre of the investigation is a small, dilapidated, single-storey modern warehouse. Police have cordoned off the area with officers now guarding the entrance.

European Union Plans Passenger Profiling

Brussels, 3 July 2007 - An airline passenger data recording system for the whole of the European Union is among new measures being prepared by the European Commission, justice and security commissioner Franco Frattini announced on Tuesday in Brussels.

The plan will offer all member states the option of establishing "national databases of passengers from across the world who fly through their airspace." Frattini is also drafting legislation that will make it a crime to post bomb-making instructions to the Internet, he said.

Court officials learn of new threats and bizarre behavior
Story by D.K. Wright Email | Bio

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio — Dr. Ashraf Badour wants the chance to post bond, but court officials said there are indications of threats and bizarre behavior that indicate he could be a danger to the public.

During a bond hearing Friday morning, Badour’s attorney offered a long list of conditions they’d be willing to meet in order for the doctor to post bond.

The prosecution spoke of items found in the doctor’s car and office. They said notations on a note found in his office were particularly frightening. They did not specify what he wrote.

Judge Frank Fregiato said the doctor’s behavior has been erratic and nothing short of bizarre and his attitude, cooperation and insight were all very poor.

Fregiato said the court has concerns regarding heroin, cocaine and alcohol use. He also said he has concerns regarding threats to blow up a Sunoco Station in Bridgeport. (snip)

New Accusations Surface Against Imprisoned Doctor

(snippets)
Fregiato said Badour also threatened to blow up Bridgeport’s Sunoco station and made threats against people at East Ohio Regional Hospital.

Martins Ferry police said they have concerns after finding evidence in Badour’s car.

Police Chief Barry Carpenter said, “We found a piece of notebook paper with four poisons listed in it and scriptures that would indicate devil worship.”

Stolen by a pair of burka-wearing bank robbers

TWO armed men disguised as Muslim women in burkas held up a bank in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, and got away with some US$40,000, Bosnian police said yesterday.

They said the pair entered a Union Bank branch wearing the black veils and trained guns on customers. They made them lie on the floor while tills were emptied. “Everything happened in a moment. Two persons in black niqabs (burkas) came into the bank. I thought they were ladies,” one customer said.
