A Pyrrhic Victory (Sour Grapes from Linda Chavez)
Townhall ^ | June 29, 2007 | Linda Chavez

Posted on 06/29/2007 8:46:21 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Immigration reform is dead. But before conservatives who killed this bill start popping champagne corks, they ought to consider the following.

Our borders will be less secure, not more. Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so. The 12 million illegal aliens who are here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes. In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.

But you won't hear this if you tune in to talk radio over the next few days or read conservative blogs. There will be lots of gloating over having killed "amnesty." There will be claims that senators finally "listened to the people." And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

--snip--

But none of this matters to the radio talk show hosts who encouraged their millions of listeners to shut down the congressional phone system with calls protesting "amnesty." Nor does it matter to the myriad direct mail outfits opposing immigration, which will reap tens of millions of dollars in donations to fatten their coffers as a result of this "victory."

Then re-submit legislation dealing with border security issues.

AND TELL BUSH TO DO HIS JOB AND BUILD THE FENCE THAT IS MANDATED BY A LAW HE SIGNED.

Linda's just pissy because we didn't fall for the notion that border security depended upon amnesty.

What a concept. Deport those who are here illegally. Linda makes it sound like the second coming of the Holocaust.

The wall was already signed into law last October. Now we just need a President Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson to actually build it. No help from the Dems needed.

And yes, I’m still doing my happy dance.

The question to ask people like Chavez is: if these illegals were coming predominantly from non-Latin America, would you feel the same way?

If she answers “no” then she’s being a racist.

If she answers “yes” then she’s lying.

Riiiiight!

I know I'm just a bigoted, unpatriotic gringoette, and not as brilliant as this woman, but would someone please explain how wide open borders can get any worse? LOL!

I get so tired of these pro shamnesty racists insulting our intelligence. The way I look at it is that it can't get any worse than what it is now, unless the border guards all walked away.

There's something strangely disturbing about your posts on this thread...flawed premises, illogically applied, lead to insane conclusions. I'm tempted to point out your...what...idiocy or spin? Strategic ignorance?

That would require, however, that I attempt to do what one Freeper described as "looking for the clean end of a turd." I can take a shower for that...I don't know how to disinfect my brain after thinking for very long about your "thoughts."

Do you know what just dawned on me? Could it be that the goobermint is taxing people and business way to much, so they (the business owner) wants to resort to slave labor to maintain a profit margin?

I know it sounds strange, but the problem is compounded by the level of taxation forced on business, and the businesses are responding by hiring people off the books - legal and illegal - to perform the labor needed. In turn, the taxes are creating a black market of services and labor that the government will attempt to regulate. In turn, they will waste more tax dollars trying to regulate the problem that they created.

Now if that isn't a pork barrel, I don't know what is....

Our borders will be less secure, not more.

Ahem... Doing exactly the same thing now makes the borders less secure than they already were? Status quo reduces results?

This woman is writing stupidity.

LOL! You guys got your opium like emotions off killing the bill, but now have to suffer the withdrawl symptoms of your victory. Have a nice hangover.

Ah...Dane! There you are! Haven't seen you in a Chihuawa's age. Sorry! Your side lost. You'll get over it some day.

I see that Chavez is being a good little statist and putting group identity before common sense. I USED to think she has something to say worth listening to, but not recently. Kind of like Jeff Jacoby who has faded into irrelevance too.

Wasn’t she a loyal Republican at some point?

Her support of shamnesty would still make her a loyal republican of the Bush flavor.
