More than 1000 march in protest of illegal immigrant raids

NEW HAVEN — Not even the driving rain could stop more than 1,000 demonstrators from marching through the streets of New Haven in protest of recent raids in which 34 illegal immigrants were arrested.

Carrying signs that read "No human being is illegal" and shouting "Stop the raids," the protesters marched from Quinnipiac River Park in Fair Haven to City Hall in downtown, where a rally was held.

The raids came on the heels of the city’s adoption of a plan to provide municipal identification cards for both citizens and illegal immigrants.

Speaking at the rally, Mayor John DeStefano Jr. reiterated his support for that plan.

"Next week we start the first resident ID program in America," he said. "Everyone — documented of not — come back to your City Hall next month."

The remarks drew loud applause from the audience, which crowded into City Hall to escape the afternoon thunderstorm.

On June 6, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stormed into the city, making 31 illegal immigrant arrests in the New Haven area. A few days later, three more people were arrested in North Haven.

ICE representatives said the raids had been planned for weeks and were not in response to the city’s groundbreaking ID card program. ICE said specific illegal immigrants who had ignored deportation orders were the target of the raids.

Many believe the raids were in retaliation for New Haven’s passage of the municipal ID program, just days earlier. One of the plan’s main goals is improving public safety by encouraging undocumented residents to cooperate with the police and not be afraid to come forward with important information relating to crimes.

Anna Lambert, an 11-year resident of New Haven who got her U.S. citizenship last year, said she was very upset about the raids.

Carrying signs that read “No human being is illegal” . . .

OK, we were just trying to be polite calling you “illegal aliens”.

Criminal aliens it is then.

I just can’t believe how they can get 1000 together so easily when we seem to not be able to do anything involving any significant numbers — or is the media not covering it.

I’ve learned anytime a liberal paper give a crowd estimate of a liberal protest, divide the estimate by 4 to get a realistic figure. If it’s a conservative protest multiply the estimate by 4.

Does this mean I can count on their support when I protest the laws I don’t like?

I’m working on my list: speeding tickets, property taxes, campaign finance reform, etc.

The American public is FED UP with the invasion of our sovereign nation by third-world outlaws from Mexico and the rest of Central and South America.

We are FED UP with the refusal of the federal government to secure our borders, opting instead to provide big business with slave labor in the form of illegals from Mexico. This irresponsible policy leaves our nation vulnerable to terrorism, and we are FED UP with this endangerment of American lives for cheap fruit.

We are FED UP with people who are here illegally and who can not and/or will not speak English.

We are FED UP with illegals from Mexico who cost American taxpayers scores of billions of dollars every year in health care, education, incarceration, and welfare.

We are FED UP with taxpayer dollars being wasted to print documents in a foreign language (Spanish).

We are FED UP with illegals who dump their medical bills on the backs of US taxpayers and who still send $20-40 billion a year back to Mexico each year.

We are FED UP with our schools being invaded by non-English speaking children from Mexico who impede the learning process of students who genuinely belong here.

We are FED UP with the fact that federal, state and local penal systems are overrun by illegals from Mexico, again costing US taxpayers billions each year.

We are FED UP with the fact that the overwhelming majority of felony crimes being investigated in Los Angeles have been committed by illegals from Mexico.

We are FED UP with federal, state and local agencies who refuse to round up and deport millions of illegals who are destroying American culture and language.

We are FED UP with politicians, Hispanic and non-Hispanic, who coddle illegals with drivers licenses, lower college tuitons and similar benefits which only encourage more people to invade the US from Mexico.

We are FED UP with the attempted Mexicanization of America. Mexico is a third- world slum and we are FED UP with those who want America to be like Mexico!

We are FED UP with corporate lobbyists, Congressmen and our President, etc. who are trying to convince us that illegal immigration is good for us and our economy.

We are FED UP with the illegal aliens who maime, rape, kill, steal from citizens in our homeland! Where do WE go for safety?

Then by all means, open the prison doors everywhere and let all the prisoners out!! Pedophiles, rapists, murderers—who cares if they broke the laws? Laws are stupid! People should be allowed to do whatever they want to do! This is America, for God’s sake, not some third world-ruled-by-a-dictator country!!! It’s all about freedom!!! How dare those law enforcement officers actually enforce the law! The intolerance is unbearable!!! Where’s my number for the ACLU?!?!?!

/sarc off

I prefer “lawbreaking invaders demanding entitlements” myself, but yours is much more succinct. ;-)

Simple. Law-abiding, taxpaying Americans are at WORK.

How `bout: “uninvited, illiterate, disgruntled/truculent foreign guests”?

No! Because that is an uninvited, unwelcome occupation of a once-sovereign land and will cause economic and social upheaveal.

Oh, you mean the same thing’s happening here?

Never mind.

Probably everyone there are Americans.

I don't remember who it was that said this about 25 years ago, but it's still the truth.

"There is no greater threat on this earth than the liberal white American."

No one said people are “illegal human beings.” They are in the United States illegally. The stupid slogan does not work.

See, I don’t like that “guests” part, because that implies an invitation...’uninvited, illiterate, disgruntled/truculent foreign malcontents’ might work though. ;-)
