Low-cost homes turn into high-priced headache

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- When Habitat for Humanity built the Fairway Oaks development here seven years ago, Mary Zeigler thought, "This is a blessing."

In just 17 days, an army of 10,000 volunteers, including former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter, built 85 low-cost houses, one of the nonprofit group's biggest "blitz build" projects.

To paraphrase, Jimmah's well intended photo-ops have resulted in some shoddy shacks.

Okay, where's the urgent investigative reporters from the DBM beating a path to Jimmah's door demanding "what did you know and when did you know it?"

Just give them all an extra 200,000 dollars and they will shut up for the next 3 years when they will think of something more they want and should be provided by others. Maybe they could sue Habitat for the money, but I’m pretty sure taxpayers will emd up footing the bill.

Uuum... you don't know much about Habitat for Humanity do you? http://realtytimes.com/rtcpages/20050315_habitatuncertain.htm
The irony of the Habitat program is that it's a non-profit effort which instantly, and literally enriches beneficiaries. Every home Habitat provides creates the basis for real and growing household wealth. The homes, after all, are provided at a below-market price so they represent immediate equity for owners. The Habitat program can be seen as a major source of household and inter-generational wealth, an important key to community stability and upward mobility. No less important, Habitat provides ownership and equity opportunities for those who are simply outside the usual home acquisition process. Because of income limitations, Habitat owners do not qualify for a typical home at a typical price. They are the working poor, those with jobs (and often several jobs) but insufficient income to achieve home ownership.
It has nothing to do with Carter. Go spew your bile at something that deserves it.

"The Habitat for Humanity local affiliate, HabiJax, maintains that the land at Fairway Oaks is stable and that most problems in the development are housekeeping issues, not structural."

I haven't taken care of my house and now it's falling apart. Get that white-boy (Carter) to come in and give me more free stuff...or, I'll keep whining.

How dare them to think I should do something for myself.

Is is the building, or the people who live in it, who are respoonsible for a small home turning into a shacK?

On a recent afternoon, Dempsey, 52, sat in her living room amid artwork commemorating the accomplishments of African-Americans. Her bare concrete floor had a crack running the width of the house, wide enough to insert quarters at three places. She pointed to poorly hung doors, cracked walls, nails popping through plasterboard, and spots that she said were mold.

Maybe her art work would be better suited in a FEMA trailer.

And I’m sure that mold was on the materials when the place was built.

17 days? The slab has to cure a little before the rest of the place is put up, no? Property contaminated? They could have built them next to the Kennedy Compound in Palm Beach if they wanted a better base to build on. No mater how well meaning some of these charities are, there are always people or problems that screw them up. (Sometimes both.)

People *pay* for their habitat houses. Habitat doesn't charge a premium and the houses are built by volunteer labor, but the houses aren't free.

Also, I can't really think of "housekeeping issues" causing concrete in your house to crack. Mold for sure, but the mold could also be coming from moisture from the cracks.

There aren't any bad guys here.

"It's a good program for poor single people like me. But when things go bad, I just want them to do something about it."

Typical. You get a house damn near free but you expect someone else to take care of it for you. From what I read, a good number of these issues should, and could, be taken care of by the homeowner. Also, new construction rarely has repair guarantees that extend past five years, so they should have expected to pay for repairs themselves. If they're that unhappy with the homes, quit bitching and leave.

And fifty of the houses have rodents and/or insects.

Maybe if they get off their behinds and clean and maintain their houses...naw, that would be too much to ask.

“And I’m sure that mold was on the materials when the place was built.”

It’s not at all impossible, or even improbable that mold started while the home was in construction.

I’ve seen workmen leave windows wide open at the end of the day, after sheet-rock was up and sometimes even after the carpet was in. Fortunately, I’ve come behind them and closed the windows, so I’ve never seen one of my homes have such a problem.

It can happen, and having seen how some “Habitat” projects are managed, its not at all impossible.

These whining losers make me sick, but I am not surprised. Since FDR we have slowly but surely transformed this nation into a culture of dependency. Individual achievement is punished, collective need is encouraged, and laziness is excused.
