A new NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll released Wednesday night finds that Republican Rudy Giuliani and Democrat Hillary Clinton remain their party’s respective frontrunners.

But the latest trends show Hillary’s position strengthening as John Edwards appears to be slipping, dropping some 5 points since the last NBC poll.

On the GOP side, former Senator Fred Thompson, who has yet to announce his candidacy, is showing surprising strength.

The poll found him second in the GOP field with 20 percent, well ahead of Mitt Romney and John McCain, both tied at 14 percent.

Poll results follow:

Democrats

Hillary Clinton 39 percent

Barack Obama 25

John Edwards 15

Bill Richardson 4

Joe Biden 4

Dennis Kucinich 3

Chris Dodd 1

______________________________________________________

Republicans

Rudy Giuliani 29 percent

Fred Thompson 20

Mitt Romney 14

John McCain 14

Mike Huckabee 3

Ron Paul 2

Tommy Thompson 1

Sam Brownback 1

Jim Gilmore 1

Tom Tancredo 1

Still appears like it’s going to be the Rudy vs hillary rematch.

RinoRudy would place well over Hillary if he ran in the DemoncRAT primary.
Hey, maybe a write-in campaign for RinoRudy in the Rat primary would be fun.

In your dreams, Rudy-booster. Rudy has lost ground, not gained it, during the last few months. That is not the sign of a strong candidate.

Fred’s at 20% and only 9 points back, and he’s not even officially in the race yet. It won’t be Rudy.

No way will Rudy beat Fred. Just wait. If Fred is at 20% before announcing his candidacy, the top slot is his for the taking.

If you assume that Fred will get the 9% now going to the second-tier guys, he is tied at 29% with Rudy. I can’t see much of the support for those guys, the more conservative candidates, going to Rudy or McCain.

Barring the earth spinning off its axis it’s going to be:

FRed vs. Hillary!

With Fred driving the stake through the heart of the Marxist Witch and staving off the inevitable slide into total socialism for another 20 years.

With the ~10% undecideds up for grabs and probably deciding the nominee.

I wouldn't be making any bets on that. It's still a long way until the Republican primaries.

Over at INTRADE, where real money and handicapping is bet on this sort of thing and is not just a pile of cooked polls, they stack up like this today...

Thompson - 30.1
Giuliani - 27.5
Romney - 20.0
McCain - 10.0
Gingrich - 2.0

Hillary - 49.3
Obama - 29.3
Gore - 10.5
Edwards - 5.7

Democrat winning Presidency - 55.0
Republican winning Presidency - 41.1

Democrats maintaining Senate control - 77.0
Republicans regaining Senate control - 13.0

Democrats maintaining Congress control - 80.0
Republicans regaining Congress control - 15.0

The ones that bother me the most are the last three. Things don't look good for the GOP and the Immigration thing is only making it worse...

Look at the trend.

Ghouliani has dropped by near half. Thompson has passed two of three in the top tier and is coming up on the lead, and he hasn’t even announced yet.
