Bush Pressing Hard on Immigration Bill (Barf Alert)
NY Times ^ | June 1, 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/01/2007 8:06:04 PM PDT by nj26

President Bush challenged lawmakers on Friday to pass an immigration bill that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants despite the harsh criticism they're hearing from voters and interest groups on both sides of the issue.

It was Bush's second personal plea in a week for support on the initiative -- one of his top domestic priorities -- part of a multi-front effort by his administration to bolster lawmakers in both parties as the Senate resumes a searing debate on immigration.

''No matter how difficult it may seem for some politically, I strongly believe it's in this nation's interest for people here in Washington to show courage and resolve and pass a comprehensive immigration reform,'' Bush told a group of activists, lobbyists and analysts who have pushed for an overhaul.

Lawmakers, at home during a weeklong recess, are hearing from conservatives who decry the measure as overly lenient and from liberals who are clamoring for its passage even as they complain it is filled with problems.

Bush acknowledged those gripes, but he added, ''The question people have to answer is, are we going to sacrifice the good for the sake of the perfect?''

The president also took on those -- mostly in his own party -- who brand the bill as amnesty for lawbreakers.

''This bill isn't amnesty,'' Bush said. ''For those who call it amnesty, they're just trying to, in my judgment, frighten people about the bill. This bill is one that says we recognize that you're here illegally and there's a consequence for it.''

“Cut off the jobs..”

A lot of conservative, hard-working small and medium sized American business owners are hiring them.

Has the President totally gone over the edge?

No, it appears that this tendency to 'make nice' with our domestic enemies has been there all along, there are so many examples.

The President finally lost me on that global warming nonsense a couple days ago, hard to take him serious about anything now.

They aren’t good conservatives if they are knowingly hiring illegals. They should be thrown in jail, giving the people who
obey the law a chance to make it.

A government that will not enforce it's own laws is a government that should be over-thrown!!

Right. Just when I think these threads couldn't get more irrational.....

I was absolutely shocked when I read that statement. What the, um, weeeel, bloody hell is he smoking? What good? We know what the perfect is. Send them home and make bloody well sure they don't get back in any way but the front door. The man has gone nuts. I can't even stand it when I have to chose English at the ATM. I saw the best vanity plate in Pickerington yesterday. Simply said, "ENGLISH". Loved it.

Read the posts. If you can't pick out the hysterical, irrational and over the top hatefilled attacks on Bush then I can't help you.

I'm sure anybody who diagrees with you personally on any issue couldn't possible be a "good conservative".

If I hear this self righteous cliche parroted one more time I think I'll throw up.

"I never thought we would be railing the President for his beliefs and his resolve, but he is flat wrong. If he has lost us on Free Republic, he no longer has any support. I pray that he comes to is senses soon."

For some of us, this is no surprise. We tried to tell the rest of FR years ago that Bush is no conservative. Look for my own comments in these threads.

The standard answer from Republican loyalists was always "But we can't turn control over to the dastardly Democrats!" Well, why not? When Clinton was president, the GOP Congress showed enough guts to fight him on major issues. For all his philandering, Clinton did not damage this country domestically as much as Bush has already, and Bush is still at it.

The Republican leadership long ago decided that they could take you guys for granted. You pretty much told them you were not going anywhere, so they rationally switched their attention to other voters they might still attract. Many of us told you way back when that if you're not prepared to withhold your vote (and suffer temporary consequences while they realize they must meet your desires), then you have thereby signed up for supporting a party that drifts further and further away from conservatism.

And lo and behold, that's where you now are.

If you cut off the REASON they are here they will self deport. Enforce the present laws for a change , severe fines for ANYONE employing an illegal , no freebies for illegals. They will have zero reason to stay here ..Common sense as I see it .

Conservatives believe in following the law. Apparently you think breaking the law is fine. I’m not surprised, seeing what you’ve been spewing around here.

A green card and we'll waive the years they would have had to wait if they'd done it legally. Meanwhile, all the people who are trying to come here legally can wait another 10-15 years.

Amen! My husband goes to Korean barber. He's an older gent, as a major in the SKo army, immigrate to the US with his wife and daughter. Went to barber college, learned a trade, worked at other barber shops, and a few years back was able to open his own. And, yup, after nearly 12 years he and his family are still waiting for the paperwork. Needless to say, he is furious.

Moral of the story? In today's US you follow the rules, you pull your own weight...and you're reward is a kick in the head.

Don't lecture me on the law. Apparently you think making false accusations against those who disagree with you is perfectly right on these boards.

I never said breaking the law is fine. EVER.

I have also stated repeatedly that I am for TOTAL border security even if that means building a wall across the entire border.
Ok?

I am however against draconian enforcement of law that hurts people unecessarily because a bunch of spoiled brats who enjoy the benefits and blessings of this country want to deny the same to others over what are legal technicalities.

People like you talk about the law without having a clue as to it's true purpose and spirit.

You would probably force an ambulance to stop at traffic lights while their patient is dying.

You don't understand that the law was designed to benefit people and not to harm them.

If a person has been a working contributing member of society for several years, the idea that you would have them fired, deported and sent back the life of poverty they escaped simply because they entered the country illegally is a warped perversion of the spirit and intention of the law.

It reminds me of why Jesus saved His greatest condemnation for the Pharisees, those who considered themselves to be "legally" righteous, while they in fact betrayed the spirit of the law.

I will lecture you on anything I please. You spew whatever YOU want, obviously.

You approved of people who hire illegals. It is illegal AND immoral to hire illegals. It is NOT a “technicality” when criminals ignore our laws and come into our country to steal benefits that they are not entitled to.
