WASHINGTON, DC, May 8, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Zogby poll released today shows that parents are far more likely to favour abstinence education over so-called 'comprehensive' sex education which focuses on proper use of contraceptives.  The poll found that 83% of parents think it is important for their child to wait until they are married to have sex.  And further that 78% of parents think sex education classes in public schools should place more emphasis on promoting abstinence than on condom and other contraceptive use.

The poll was commissioned by the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) and reveals that when parents become aware of what abstinence education vs. comprehensive sex education actually teaches, support for abstinence programs jumps from 40% to 60%, while support for comprehensive programs drops from 50% to 30%. This sharp increase in support of abstinence education is seen across all political and economic groups.

The results come as as federal and state lawmakers are debating funding for sex education in public schools.

On that question, the study showed that 59% of parents said more funding should go to abstinence education while 22% said more should go to comprehensive sex education.

"These results confirm broad-based support for abstinence education, including teaching teens about developing healthy relationships and increasing self worth and self control," said Valerie Huber, executive director of the NAEA. "While abstinence education has been continually misrepresented by its opponents, we were confident that parents would strongly prefer abstinence education over so-called 'comprehensive' sex education after they received full, accurate information about this common sense educational approach."

The survey also showed overwhelming parental support for how abstinence programs permit an age appropriate discussion of contraception within the context of promoting abstinence as the healthiest choice. In line with the abstinence education approach, most parents (93%) said they want their children to be taught the limitations of condoms in providing complete protection against specific STDs and to learn how often condoms fail in preventing pregnancy based upon typical use.

The majority of parents reject the so-called "comprehensive" sex education approach, which focuses on promoting and demonstrating contraceptive use. Sixty-six percent of parents think that the importance of the "wait to have sex" message ends up being lost when programs demonstrate and encourage the use of contraception.

The problem is that the leftists running the government education/indoctrination centers want children to have as much sex as possible with as many people as possible of both genders.

Because a lot of liberals are aborting themselves out of existence. Therefore, no children.

You know, Americans just don't like "comprehensive" approaches to anything. It's just a code for selling out.

...And then they want them to seek government funding to alleviate their self generated woes.

Of course not. They only feature people who talk about how wonderful the 60s were because “everybody” was stoned 24/7 and they had the freedom to do anything.

And some of it with the teachers themselves!

Abstinance is necessary. Some kids might get to it anyway, but at least they will not flaunt it.

I’d prefer it but I am not naive enough to expect it from my boys.

comprehensive programs

Alias:

"Living and breathing programs"

"progressive programs"

And last but not least (drumroll):

"I don't care, someone else will take care of my problems and it's free" program.

Perhaps not but expecting that they would feel concern for and understand that some things in life have consequences and beds have to be made isn't unreasonable.

Schools teach about condoms and safe sex but don’t teach the value of not having sex before marriage. Their only teaching about the dangers of promiscuous sex is to use a rubber.

That is a consequence of their policies, certainly. Short-term gain without regard for tomorrow is an ingrained trait of their thinking - what is sex, esp. the free love extramarital sort, besides instant gratification. Long-term consequences are not their forté, as evidenced by their demand for measures like abortion to circumvent said consequences.

In the meantime, conservatives are having children. To the extent they discipline and teach them appropriately, these children will carry the mantle and clean things up down the road.

Interesting that the abortion rate has dropped in recent years. Since popular culture has not made any serious strides toward curbing the normalization of indecency (extramarital sex), this must be attributable to other causes. I would posit two:

1) Reduction of the number of girls of childbearing age- born in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's...

2) Reduction of the number of the types of girl children who would be raised with a me-first worldview, since those girls being allowed to live are growing up in Christian pro-life families, some with a dozen children or more (I know three such families).

The only factor working in favor of Christian conservatives in America is the fact that they have kids. The only factor working against American liberals is that the VAST majority that I’ve talked to won’t.

Of course, this advantage is matched and exceeded by both the Islamic world and illegal Latin immigration.

A "give up" philosophy they tote.

What else that they have done recently that has enforced my impression of them?

Morals are necessary for civilization to exist.

Too bad liberals make the effort to take over teachers associations and library associations in order to properly indoctrinate children.

Or possibly, a third option:

Children are now taught how to use birth control in schools.
