Many in the West declaim the apparent absence of "Moderate Muslim" voices speaking out against the perversion of Islam used to excuse Islamicist attacks against innocent people in pursuit of political aims. However, mass protests in several cities in Turkey on Saturday, May 5, 2007 in opposition to the candidacy of Islamicist politician Mohammed Gul prove otherwise.
The Deutsche Presse-Agentur article "Thousands March in Support of Secular Democracy" (http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/world/archives/2006/11/06/2003335081) reports: "Tens of thousands people took to the streets of three western Turkish towns on Saturday to protest the prospect of the Islamist-rooted politician Abdullah Gul becoming the next head of state."

Islam has no place in our country. I’m sorry, but it is not our way of life and you can’t tell a good one from a bad one.
The protests in Turkey were a good sign, but they need to be taken in historical context. The Turks have basically massacred or expelled the vast majority of Jews and Christians who used to live in their borders, and were one of the most aggressive exporters of Islam through invasion and oppression. There is little to no religious freedom in the country—the issue of any religion other than Islam was handled with utmost severity by prior generations.
Lurker, you are all right! I had heard somewhere that a moderate moslem is one who only wants to kill Jews. There may be so-called moderate moslems over in Turkey, but I doubt seriiously there are any here. Jus over and covert ones.
