House sends sweeping immigration reform bill to governor’s desk (Oklahoma leads the nation!)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Legislation described as the nation’s most sweeping attempt to deny jobs and public benefits to illegal immigrants was sent to Gov. Brad Henry’s desk Tuesday.

State lawmakers urged Henry to sign the measure into law after it was approved in a bipartisan 84-14 vote by the state House. The bill was approved 41-6 by the Senate last month.

“The people of Oklahoma are very strongly for this bill,” said House Speaker Lance Cargill, R-Harrah.

Immigrant groups said the bill is a wrong-headed approach to stop illegal immigration and urged Henry to veto it.

“It’s not going to control immigration. It’s going to create a long-term sour view in the Latino community,” said Ed Romo, vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“It’s targeting the Latinos, the Hispanics, and nobody else,” said Ed Madrid, state director of LULAC.

“It’s targeting the Latinos, the Hispanics, and nobody else,”

Oh? Is that a racist assumption that illegals are all hispanic?

How about the long term sour view of the "Latino community" that illegal Mexicans are creating?

Just as long as they don’t close the Chelinos restaurant in Capital Hill.

Only when they want you to stop debating. At all other times wherever they use it its a sympathy whine which they expect to be given concessions for.

But I have a feeling you knew that already. ;-)

Let’s hope they have enough votes to override the veto.

The article states that Okalhoma leads the nation, and that state has led before. In Aug. 1990, when I was registered to vote near Oklahoma City, that state was the first state who passed a referendum for state legislator term limits.

I wish that every would pass a bill that is similar to the Oklahoma one. It won’t happen in my state, Illinois. We have a liberal gov., and both houses of the legisature are congrolled by Democrats. On Tues., during one of Chicago’s illegal immigrant rights rallies, Mayor Daley gave a speech and said that he supports the criminals.

If I were here illegally and of mestizo background, and I had 'a long term sour view of Oklahoma', I'd seriously consider leaving the state.

Maybe even return somewhere below Del Rio where Oklahoma wouldn't be around to hurt my feelings.

I expect that B of A would even let them keep their Master Cards.

Since I live in Panama and there is no PC or word police here, what is the difference in the words “Latino,” “hispanic,” and “Latin.”

Here, when speaking English, we refer to folks born in Latin America as Latins.

When speaking Spanish, it is “Latino/Latina” which comes from América Latina or Latinoamérica

When you have no facts on your side, call it names.

“It’s not going to control immigration. It’s going to create a long-term sour view in the Latino community,” said Ed Romo, vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Oh no! A long-term sour view? Never heard of it before but it might just work. Maybe if it's sour enough they'll stay home?

“It’s targeting the Latinos, the Hispanics, and nobody else,” said Ed Madrid, state director of LULAC

Well LULAC seems to be targeting some things/people of its own...so much so that it needs a state director - who probably takes home a nice salary from this non-profit.

Pat Fennell, executive director of the Latino Community Development Agency in Oklahoma City, said the state does not have the authority to supersede federal immigration law.

Oh goody - another mouthpiece organization. What about a merger of LCDA & LULAC to save costs? Who's paying their bills, anyway? No wonder he's upset - they've spent good money softening up DC Democrats and Republicans alike to ignore the border problem. Now those pesky state politicians are responding to the will of the people - damn them! Who told them to put their shovel in anyway?

“It opens the door for all kinds of litigation,” Fennell said. “We’re going to be paying the consequences of this silly bill.”

Ah yes - litigation. You can hear the drool hitting the floor in the legal offices right now. As for consequences, this bill definitely has them - lawbreaking border-crossers and their enablers may not find them so silly after all.
