A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre has been describing how a colleague died to protect others. Although badly injured, graduate student Waleed Shalaan distracted gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save another person from his bullets.
Waleed saved another student's life. The surviving student, who wishes to remain anonymous, told of Waleed's heroics through an email to his supervisor.
He describes how he was left uninjured after Cho's initial round of shots.
Meanwhile, Waleed had been wounded but was still alive.
However, when Cho later returned to the classroom to inspect for signs of life among his victims, the surviving student struggled to remain calm.
He believes he would have been shot dead were it not for Waleed's "protective movement" that distracted the gunman.
Cho turned and shot Waleed for a second time, killing him, before leaving the classroom.
Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, has said the student asked to him to tell the tale "so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice."
Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Mr Dymond's account.
"He was trying to save someone else," she said repeatedly.
Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before he was sent to Egypt for burial.'
He may have fallen in with a good crowd.
So does this mean he doesn’t get 72 virgins?
What mimaw said.
The normal 5 minute ride from the train station, along the interstate to the hotel lasted over a half hour.
He was thrilled to show off his city to three out-of-towners, and gave us his pager number so that we could call him when we got back. A month later we called his pager, he met us at the airport (even remembered us) and he drove us up to the train station when we returned from Denmark.
Nice story.
But why is the MSM pumping up the Muslim religion?
Remember the Christian girl Rachel Scott who was murdered in the Columbine shootings?
IIRC, the MSM buried any mention of her religion.
I prefer the Reagan, “trust but verify” approach. So far I see no verification of this MSM Fairy Tale.
Yes but Muslims believe that lying to a non Muslim is Ok.
Dont ever turn your back on any Muslim, they are like mad dogs...
The US helps them every chance we can, and we get what in return: Hated, reviled and killed by the ROP that we just helped. Remember when that tidal wave hit Aach, they took our help, then told us to get out of the area. the Balls of these “people” is amzing.
What good has this so called religon ever gave mankind.
Colour Me as one who thinks this story is quetionable from the get-go. Having dealt with several injured individuals in the past (and being injured personally on more than one occasion) I do not believe the details of this story lend great credence to the account of ‘distracting someone to save someone else’. I see nothing in that account that immediately jumps out to make that distinction. I see it more as someone attempting to either attribute grander qualities to the referred individual or with a more ulterior motive (read: Specific Talking Points) in mind. Nothing I can think of in past experiences better fits the published circumstances and actions than that and the playing-it-up-for-the-media attitude.
You recall incorrectly. Her religion was mentioned frequently, as was Cassie Bernal's famous declaration of faith (inaccurately, it turned out, but her Christianity was reported).
What possible excuse could that individual have for wanting to remain anonymous? Cowardice? Bullsh*t! That person, if such a person existed, would be proclaiming it from the roof tops in his/her own name, and on every liberal talk show in America. Larry King, Wolf Blister, Al sharpton, etc., etc.

By his own description Anonymous was unhurt and could have escaped out the door after the psycho went elsewhere. If there was any other escape route that Anonymous would have felt safer using than the door, s/he could have used that and it seems reasonable s/he would have if one existed.
Thus, with no escape route available, a momentary distraction would have no chance of saving anyone. If Anonymous didn't take an escape route when there was no shooter present and s/he had plenty of time to get out, why would s/he then try it literally under the gun?
When the Holocaust survivor jammed the door with his body, his students DID have an escape route and used it even as the hero died.
This is NOT intended to demean or diminish Waleed who was a victim every bit as much as the non-Muslim victims. I too suspect he startled or moved in pain, causing the psycho to shoot him again. That would have taken seconds. I doubt the psycho would have forgotten about Anonymous if he had really noticed him before.
So while I don't fault the victim, I DO fault whoever made up this BS that doesn't even hang together well.
The kind, gentle, sweet people on this thread who figure Anonymous just didn't want into the media circus may be right. OTOH I suspect that if the name was given as Abu Jihadi Mohammed spinning this story, even the kind, gentle, sweet people would have sprayed coffee or soft drinks out their noses.
This is a desperate attempt to manufacture a hero after-the-fact from a debacle that produced only victims and a villain (apart from the holocaust survivor prof, who, the evidence clearly shows, acted heroically). It has the added benefit from a leftist PC perspective of making the hero Muslim, which the media might well be expected to use as an indirect but not-so-subtle gouge in the eye of the Bush administration over its prosecution of the WOT.
The Muslim student did NOT deserve to die. He was a victim in the saddest and most complete sense of the term. But any reasonable interpretation of the evidence suggests that he was not anything more than a victim, a passive unoffending target of flesh for a skinny psychotic punk with a handgun.
“What possible excuse could that individual have for wanting to remain anonymous? “
How about being a FReeper who had been previously proclaiming that all Muslems, citizens or not, should be deported ?
It should be no suprise that there are vastly more good people in the Muslim population that throat cutters, beheaders, suicide bombers, and assasins. The real problem is that the “good” Muslims don’t react against those that are intent on sucking that religion into the cesspool of depravity.
One's religion (within reason) should not be the standard upon which we choose to hang our banner. The quality, honesty, and integrity of the individuals within that sphere of interest we wish to participate in should be the overriding factors upon which we choose to align ourselves with.
“Why remain anonymous?”
I certainly can’t say whether or not this is just propaganda, but assuming it’s true, the student is remaining anonymous to try to avoid being assailed by the media. There were at least 350-400 reporters in Blacksburg.
Bingo. Good analysis.
Email sent out from MSAVT is how this got started. http://www.msanational.org/finance/vt07donate.html
