Actually, they have never made fun of the muslim religion. It’s funny that even we conservatives have become so sensitized that we are praising them for even SHOWING A PICTURE OF MOHAMAD (in the superbestfriends episode), and calling them brave for trying to show mohomed buying tea.

Imagine if they did an episode of the prophet beating up his pre-teen wife. Then I’d praise them for their bravery (probably at their funeral).

I wasn’t offended, although Bill Donahue has never said anything that would remotely make this particular satire believable in any way. It’s usually the satire that has truth to it that hurts. Otherwise it’s just silly.

In other recent controversies, Donohue has called the co-creators of "South Park," Matt Stone and Trey Parker, whores and cowards.

Donahue's great.

So far they haven't done any episodes attacking a religion in itself

They skewered scientology (OK, not really what you would call a religion)

They tore the founder of Mormonism to shreds, along with their basis for faith.

They have ripped much of catholicism, although they have not attacked the basis of the christian faith, that Jesus died for our sins (they even said that without humor last night). Still, if I was catholic I would probably not be a fan of the show.

They've been pretty good to the Jewish faith, although the kids kamp with Ham and Moses was a little odd. Of course, they have made Jesus into a sometimes pathetic character (sitting around waiting for his phone to ring on his talk show).

I find that a poignant reflection of the world as it is today. I didn't see Jesus in that case as pathetic, just sad that nobody was calling on Him even though He made himself available to all.

As for your other examples, it seems they go after people, especially the hypocrites and charlatans, and not so much after the beliefs themselves, especially if they're doing some good in the lives of people who practice them honestly and wholeheartedly.

You can insult those who watch it all you want

Please edify me as to where I've done this. Stating that the show is juvenile and in no way conservative doesn't insult those who watch it. My insults are directed at the show and its creators.

As I suggested to you on another thread, I will do things that I enjoy and find edifying.

Actually, they have never made fun of the muslim religion.

As has been stated, they usually make fun of the idiots in a religion.

It’s funny that even we conservatives have become so sensitized that we are praising them for even SHOWING A PICTURE OF MOHAMAD (in the superbestfriends episode)

That was before this whole conflict came up. The episodes where they deserve praise are the one where Comedy Central censored Mohammed's image, and the later one that was, well, unflattering to Jesus. The whole thing exposed the idiocy of Muslims getting upset and the hypocrisy of our media in catering to them.

Imagine if they did an episode of the prophet beating up his pre-teen wife.

Knowing them, it's quite possible. A bunch of angry letters from Muslims would probably get Matt & Trey to try to offend them as much as possible in a later episode.

No it really it a thing like anything else that someone can overfocus on. The only thing that makes TV any different is it’s got a good combination of things to get people hooked, primarily being stories (people like stories) and shiny lights (people tend to be easily distracted by shiny objects). But really it’s not different than the addiction pre-WWII people had to movies and the radio. People like turning off their reality for a while and turning on someone elses, and a reality where the problems get solved fairly quickly will always appeal. When it comes to object addiction most people don’t know it, when there’s no visible withdrawal symptoms people don’t really notice.

I don’t have an active political life. I’ve been a newshound and political watcher for too long, I am incapable of being a true believer. I study, I vote, once in a while I donate, I don’t volunteer ever, and I take my side losing with the same roll as when my favorite sports teams lose.

It’s much more entertaining than the radio, and it is on in the home six and a half hours a day, which makes it much more of a presence than the movies. Sorry you can’t see this, but let’s call it quits on this.

Well it has the shiny object appeal that radio is missing. But look at all the live threads that show up for various talk radio guys here on FR, obviously radio still has a strong addictive factor, many people just can’t seem to get through the day without their Rush or Savage fix.

In the pre-WWII and WWII era life revolved around the movies, that was a primary way people found out what was going on in the world. The whole Movietone News all day Saturday matinee thing was huge, and even during the weekdays movie houses were a major social gathering place and focus of the community.

And let’s not forget that with the whole VCR/ DVD/ premium cable channel thing movies and TV have now merged significantly. You really can’t say movies aren’t present at home, most people have some sort of home movie library.

I’m sticking to reality, things are things and people get addicted to them. Trying to make any of those things some sort of boggieman super destroyer of humanity is just plain silly. Crediting TVs with some sort of superpower ability to hook people is putting a victim roll on them for voluntary behavior. Any time you allow people to become victims for voluntary behavior you’re doing at least as much damage to society as you’re crediting the thing that supposedly victimizes them.

“Real Catholics don’t pray to statues for healing..”

I am Catholic, Donahue is a self righteous blowhard. He deserved to be skewered. He was, I laughed. Hare Club for Men! Kyle having to kill Jesus for him to be resurrected again. Dr Teabag!

I had a lot of laughs in this one and TIVOed it. It may become a household classic to watch every year right up there with Bill Murray’s “Scrooged.”

Cracked me up, my 16 year old daughter panicked today because we havent died eggs yet :)

[I’d want them to stop ripping Catholicism.]

South Park has never ripped Catholicism. South Park has always ripped small minded individuals who pervert their own religion and misrepresent its teachings to make themselves appear more moral than others.

I contend that those who actually have watched South Park and are offended by it fall into that category of small minded individual.
