TALLAHASSEE, Fla. When artist John Sims sees the Confederate flag, he sees "visual terrorism," and a symbol of a racist past. When Robert Hurst sees the flag, he is filled with pride as the descendant of a soldier who fought for the South during the Civil War.
Their differences have flared into a war of words, catching a local museum in the middle.
An art exhibit by artist John Sims, entitled 'The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag,' is show on display at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, Friday, March 16, 2007, in Tallahassee, Fla. The exhibit has sparked controversy with the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and they have asked the museum to remove it.
Hurst walked into the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science this past week and saw an exhibit by Sims, including a Confederate flag hung from a noose on a 13-foot gallows in a display titled "The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag."
Hurst asked the museum to remove the display, along with 13 other pieces by Sims.
The museum, however, announced Friday it is standing by Sims' work, on display since Feb. 26, because it wants to inspire dialogue in the community about a symbol that engenders a diversity of strong responses.
"There's a balance between the nature of the art that we show and the outcome that we seek, which is to promote dialogue and conversation, and have you maybe think of something in a slightly different way," said Chucha Barber, the museum's executive director.
Hurst, commander of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans chapter, said Friday he has lost respect for the museum, calling the display of Sims' work "offensive, objectionable and tasteless."

the other BIG secret is that MANY "abolitionists", northern VIPs & major northern CORPORATIONS were "up to their eyes" IN the "flesh trade" from the first days of African slavery until it's final days in South America.
when slavery was no longer PROFITABLE in the north, the HYPOCRYTES sold their slaves into areas of the hemisphere where slavery was STILL profitable. THEN, the DAMNyankee HYPOCRYTES congratulated themselves that they had NO slaves!!!!

DO NOT EVER DOWNGRADE MY ANCESTORS WHO FOUGHT AGAINST THE NORTH'S ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE SOUTH.
You can thank the north for keeping the south from creating a hellhole of a country that would make South Africa look like a good place to live.
Oh, I see. So it was the North that created this:
and this:
and this:
And none of that has anything to do with Tom Watson, or the Talmadges, or Jimmy Carter? You clowns are really incredible.
If you live in the Northeast, you probably realize that most of your parents or grandparents or great-grandparents voted for FDR and that had a lot to do with the kind of America we live in today.
But that someone could live in what was down to our own time one of the most heavily Democrat states in the country and not make the connection between how Georgians have voted and what policies the country followed boggles the mind.
Georgians lined the streets in Warm Springs to see FDR and gave the Democrats more votes than Maine or Vermont ever did. Own up to it. Their Senators and Congressmen lined up for pork for years and got more of it from the federal government than a lot of other states. And what Georgia left undone for a century eventually got the feds involved in civil rights protection. Own up to that as well.
A lot of the problem with these sectional animosities is that people don't see or don't want to see the connections between things. This allows them to think that everything that's wrong is always the fault of some oppressive "them" forcing their will on the virtuous "us," when in fact, people's own choices may have much to do with what happens.
In some people's warped world any criticism of the South amounts to hatred. But really, if you compare what I wrote to what you wrote, I don't think there's any contest in that regard.

don't you get tired of FReepers thinking that you're "not too bright"???

Thanks. It certainly is obvious.
An archaic symbol of the losing side of a terrible war.
Who said it was?
In fact, respect for the Confederate heritage, until very recent political agitation, was a near universal American sentiment. The Confederate battle flag was carried by fighting men in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The display of our flag has been officially supported by the organized descendants of Union veterans. Shelby Foote, the greatest historian of the war, has publicly endorsed leaving our flag alone, a weight of authority greater than many ordinary historians put together.
How can a symbol be archaic when it is as relevant today as it ever was regarding the contract made between the people of America and its government?

Most of us from the north, and practically everyone who's family has come to this country over the past 100 years, sees that silly flag as a regional phenomenon of folks idealizing a losing cause.
No American outside of the south, apart from members of the Klan, would be caught flying that flag.
Hardly. Methinks you should go back and read the History before making statements such as this.
Oh let's just forget that the 'slaves' brought to America were brought here under the Stars and Stripes, and let's also forget that many Northerners had slaves as well.
Just s style note. Ease up on the WILD use of all-CAPS. It makes guy seem LIKE a raving LOON. This is a convention that goes back at least twenty years, in my own experience, and probably longer.
Folks take you more seriously when you come across as less less wild-eyed. In a word, chill.
