Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, said famed 18th century British lexicographer Samuel Johnson. To update the quote for our current era you might substitute children for patriotism and climate alarmist for scoundrel.
Last week, outgoing United Nations World Food Program chief James Morris reminded us that 18,000 children die every day from hunger and malnutrition. Morris called the situation a terrible indictment of the world in 2007.
In contrast to our quixotic fixation with trying to fine-tune global climate by tweaking atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, the ongoing tragedy of starving children would seem to be a relatively easy problem to solve. After all, wealthy developed nations have plenty of surplus food and the wherewithal to deliver it to the worlds malnourished.

unfortunately, when people like Al or Kofi or their ideological cousins try to "do something" about starving children, they are still chained in too many ways to the theories of a 19th century crackpot/kook economist. The type of reforms needed in these 3rd World countries for the long term fly in face of the closely held beliefs of those who rule the structures that are set up to deliver relief: both public and private.
The worst abuse of children from the environmental whackos was their 50 Things You Can Do To Save the Environment list that was given to Grammar School children. One the the things on the list was "Don't have children". That's a hell of a message to give little kids. Ya' IT'S THEIR FAULT for living.
All activists abuse children; most children get over it.
Think back on all the hysteria of the past: envoronmentalism, recycling, smoking, AIDS, nuclear power...
In every instance, the "front' line soldiers are children... and their schools.

OK, Milloy said something I can agree with. I just don't like the way he phrases it. There are short-term problems and long-term problems.
......
The survey, detailed in Chapter 2 of the book, also identified two particular groups, or "interpretive communities," of Americans at the extremes of global warming beliefs:
* Alarmists, who have apocalyptic visions, envision "death of the planet" or post-nuclear-war-like scenarios. "These visions are well beyond the most extreme scientific scenarios," Leiserowitz said. Alarmists, he found, are slightly more likely to be liberal and to hold strong egalitarian values.
* Naysayers, who deny, discount or disbelieve the reality of climate change. "These people claim that there is no scientific evidence, blame global warming on media hype, or even hold dark conspiracy theories, such as scientists making up data to protect their job security," he said. "Naysayers are much more likely to be white, male, conservative, Republican, very religious, hold strongly individualistic or hierarchist values and to get their news and information from radio talk shows."
The majority of Americans are in between these two extremes, he added, but are more closely aligned with the alarmists than the naysayers."
.....
That part made me laugh.
Should read:
The majority of Americans are in between these two extremes, but more of them are gulled by the alarmists than by the naysayers.
The only current problem I have with our contribution to global warming is that it's not enough. I'm getting tired of Wintry Mix.
