Immigration Raid Leaves Texas Town a Skeleton
Houston Chronicle ^ | February 9, 2007 | By Sylvia Moreno

CACTUS, Tex. -- ......Although opened with local hires, Vietnamese and Laotian refugees became the dominant workforce by the late-1970s. By the mid-'80s the workforce was overwhelmingly Mexican immigrants, and by 2000 the Guatemalans, speaking the Mayan language of Quiché, had started to arrive. Before the Dec. 12 raid, Swift employed 3,050 workers in Cactus at a starting wage of $11.50 an hour to slaughter, process and package several thousand head of cattle daily.

Work inside the plant is hard, dirty, stinky and dangerous, and it is where Cactus's biggest business owner and mayor, Luis Aguilar, and Cactus's largest landlord, Thanh Nguyen, got their starts in the United States. Aguilar, a native of Chihuahua, began working at the plant in 1976 using false identity papers, he admits. In 1986, he was able to legalize his status in the United States, along with 2.7 million illegal workers, under the amnesty program authorized by the federal Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Previously criticized by some local officials who thought he aided and even encouraged illegal immigrants to settle in Cactus, Aguilar took the raids almost personally. He canceled the annual city Christmas party because so many residents, including City Council members, had spouses or other relatives who had been arrested by immigration authorities. Aguilar subsequently lent one of his buildings to be used as a food and used-clothing pantry for residents whose relatives were caught in the raid.

"These are my people," said Aguilar, 50, who today owns the largest house in Cactus, a nearby 575-acre ranch, a laundromat and the town's only full-fledged grocery store. About half of his 26 rental units are empty now......

Why don't they move these plants to Mexico? And pay them a decent wage?

So does this mean he gets charged with hiring and aiding illegals? The other half of the 26 units should be empty as well.

This article keeps calling illegals "immigrants" which they are not, they are illegal border crossers who should never have been hired to begin with. Moral here for business owners? Don't hire illegals if you don't want your workers deported!

It says he is the owner and also the Mayor. Why is INS NOT CHARGING HIM?

A smart businessman would've assisted illegal aliens to get work visas so as not to have his business raided and his work force eliminated.
Note that I emphasized "smart".

Though I'm not a strong proponent of government agencies I like having our meat source inspected...by Americans!
And pay them a decent wage?
A "decent wage" across the border doesn't even come close to the $11.50/hr they're making here. It would be like $2.50-$3.50/hr.
It just don't work that way.

Aguilar should be in jail for pimping illegals, just as surely as any pimp should be in jail for running prostitutes. Breaking our laws should have equal consequences.

Work inside the plant is hard, dirty, stinky and dangerous,...

I haven't toured a packing plant in over forty years. In the various times I have been inside one I don't recall seeing any employees that I would have thought to be illegal aliens. At least for a while US citizens were willing to do the work that illegals are now taking.

The actions and attitude of Luis Aguilar shows that the previous amnesty grant was a major mistake. I hope we don't make the same mistake again.

Good Morning Calex,
Those who violate the laws of our country (illegal immigrants) are positively called criminals according to the law.
It would be nice to see those individuals/companies who hire this criminals be dealt with harshly along with their compadres(illegal non-Americans)
As I See It,

Man! I searched and find there are TWO Cactus, Texas
cities. One is just north of Dumas, in the panhandle.

But I am sure it must be THIS Cactus, Texas (near Laredo):

75 percent of the city's estimated 5,000 residents before the raid were illegal immigrants

May everyone in that town who aided and abetted the illegals go broke!

Are all those arrested out on bail with a promise to return to court at a future date?

I suspect it works something like this: I will pay you $11.00/hr on the books, but you have to pay me $4.00/hr under the table, and into my Mexican bank account.....

40 years ago most if not all meat packing plants were union, once the unions folded so did the wages and at that time is when Americans stopped working in the plants. It is not that Americans do not want to work in them, they do, but not for 6/7 bucks an hour yet the illegals will.

Right after those raids took place swift Armour and others raised their wages and the lines for employment were out the doors with waiting US Citizens. (Shortage of Illegals) LOL

"These are my people," said Aguilar,

You'd think Americans were his people.
