I never could quite see the rosy pictures of the time that portrayed the Eritreans as heroes. Granted that Ethiopia was unfortunately taken over by a Marxist tyrant, Haile Mengistu Mariam, but Eritrea was never the wonderful band of brothers that the American press portrayed at the time.
I'm thinking of books like this one by Thomas Kenneally, the author of Schindler's list:
I once met Kenneally and had lunch with him, not long after this book came out. He seemed like a nice guy, but hopelessly naive.
