There was a time when that is about all a private person could have in his possession of the Bible. The Psalms. Maybe Proverbs and Song of Solomon.

There was a small local war fought over a book of the bible.
St Columbine-if I recall correctly--who was both a prince and a monk, loaned someone a copy of, I believe, the gospel of St. John. The loanee made a copy of it. Columbine found out about it and asserted his ownership of the copy, since it was made from his book. The loanee declined to part with it--reasonably, from my viewpoint--and Columbine the prince began a small war over it. In the end some abbot stepped in and stopped it and banished him. Cast out, he became a missionary to northern europe, Aix au Chappell, I think? (Confirmation or correction anyone?)
