Shopper had pattern of leaving child unattended

Gardenia Zakrzewski Johansson

The Scottsdale woman under investigation by state authorities for leaving her toddler in the car this week while shopping at Neiman Marcus had left her child unattended the week before while she went jewelry shopping in north Scottsdale and later went to Starbucks with her dog, according to a police report.

Gardenia Zakrzewski Johansson, 39, shopped calmly for about 20 minutes at Hodson Jewelry Gallery, 8924 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, before telling employees “I have a baby in my car, can you watch him while I go to Starbucks?” according to the report.

A jewelry store employee contacted Scottsdale police on Wednesday after seeing Johansson’s mugshot in the newspaper -- the same day the woman made headlines for leaving her 2-year-old boy in the care of valet parking attendants at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

The statements of three employees who said they witnessed the jewelry store incident on Dec. 4 were taken in the report, which was released today.

One of the employees said she was “God smacked” by the question and asked the woman, “Where are you going?”

Zakrzewski Johansson then turned and left, according the report. She stopped by her car and picked up her dog and headed to Starbucks.

The child was without care for 30 to 40 minutes, the report states.

He's out working to support her shopping habit.

My thought, too. I feel really sorry for him, he probably says with her because of the child.

She took the dog to Starbucks but left the baby behind and unattended in the car. Unreal.

She isnt a bad looking woman.

Maybe some women should be marked for recreational purposes only , not to be bred.

I'd like to take credit but can't ;-)
it's British--I've heard it several times on various tv shows on BBC America. :-)

"God smacked." When "smitten by the Sword of God" is considered overly-dramatic.

She looks like a brunette Paris Hilton. I think it's the vacant eyes and blank expression.

She's not at all bad looking, but that wears off awful fast, love and concern for your children is much more durable.

Open question: can two events make a "pattern?" Much too philosophical for me this time in the morning.

She's an older mother of such a young child. She forgot to shop for a nanny before going to the jewelry store. Must be dementia.

"This woman sounds completely nuts."

Either that or it might be the old cliche of "she's on something".

She isnt a bad looking woman.

Yes, she doesn't look like a crack addict. I think we can fall back on the "completely nuts" explanation.

We once had a speaker at church explain his baldness as being due to the number of times God smacked him on the forehead. Then he looked at our pastor and said -- I see your pastor has the same problem.

The question is...

If it is an arrestable offence (which it should be) to leave your child unattended in a car in a shaded parking lot for 40 minutes then why isn't an arrestable offence to drag your child across 20 to 50 miles of desert in the searing heat with no water and no place to take shelter?

In other words, why aren't illegals that are caught in the desert arrested for endangering their children?

Bummer. This is really gonna screw up Gardenia's chance of being selected Mother Of The Year.

On the upside, given her penchant for shopping, Capitol One will be sending her 20 gazillion; 'You're Pre-Approved', credit card applications.
(what's in YOUR wallet?)

What about picking up her child...?

One offense involved leaving the child in a Silver Sedan and the next was a black Mercedes. One would think that with the money for expensive cars and jewelry, she could hire a babysitter or a nanny and stop expecting "the little people" who work paid hourly positions to watch her child for her while she shops.
