In the excellent sci-fi novel "Out of the Silent Planet," C.S. Lewis describes how Mars has a comfortable surface temperature for its numerous living creatures and lush forests due to the underground magma that heated the surface area. Perhaps a similar (non-fictional) phenomenom is how liquid water appears in Mars today.

Liquid water can exist on Mars in brief intervals, following impacts from space; any water ice in the soil vaporizes, creating a temporary local atmosphere, during the existence of which liquid water can flow. As soon as the vapor is gone (ultimately, it will head directly back to ice), the water freezes. That's why there are these "came from nowhere, went to nowhere" erosional features (those which turn out to be definitely caused by water, that is).
