"Was the Flying Imam incident staged in order to get anti-profiling legislation passed?"
SNIPPET: "I have been saying for some time now that the Flying Imam rage incident was staged to help garner support for anti-profiling legislation. Just before the Flying Imams incident happened I noted that Nancy Pelosi had come out in favor of such legislation, and suggested here and here in late November that a push for such legislation was what was behind the incident."
SAN JOSE -- A raid staged at a San Jose home was the latest attempt by Santa Clara and federal authorities to find the source of a blinding laser beam that is being flashed into the cockpits of commercial aircrafts trying to land in the Bay Area.
Serge Palanov, a spokesman from the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department, said deputies searched a home near Cambrian Village -- about seven miles south of San Jose's Mineta International Airport -- on Monday. The search did not find any evidence of the laser.
"We received several calls from the FAA and also from some citizens stating that there was a green laser emanating from a residence pointing at some commercial airliners," Palanov said. "Our own helicopter -- Star One -- went up in the air into vicinity and they also experienced this green laser pointing at them." Lasers -- small lasers commercially available and used commonly as light pointers -- can beam a high intensity light over a long distances. If the beam were to strike a pilot's eyes, it could blind him or her.
San Francisco International Airport spokesman Mike McCarron -- a former Navy airman -- said lasers -- even small seemingly harmless ones -- can be threatening to the safety of the airplane and its passengers. "It can temporarily blind you for that split second and then it takes you another 20- 30 minutes for your eyes to readjust fully to see outside that cockpit again," McCarron said. "Because what you want the pilots to do is to be able to see outside the cockpit -- see other aircraft see obstacles... obstructions lights... the flashing red lights on radio towers and stuff like that It can be very critical on the most critical part of the flight."
A recently released FAA analysis shows that nationwide in a three month period ending in January of last year, lasers were aimed at aircraft 84 times -- almost once a day -- and half of those were aimed at airliners. Palanov said South Bay authorities will be extra vigilant over the next several weeks in an attempt to find the source of the laser. "This could be punished as a felony with state prison time," he said. "This is a very serious offense."

Toledo Express flight evacuated after bomb threat is found in seat pocket
Friday, December 15, 2006
Thirty-five passengers boarding a noontime Delta Connection flight at Toledo Express Airport were evacuated, and the plane was removed to a remote area of the airfield for inspection, after a passenger found a bomb threat scrawled on an aircraft information card in a seat pocket, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority reported.
Written on the card, which shows an aircrafts basic layout and provides emergency instructions for travellers, was an obscenity about America and an arrow leading toward the back of the plane to the word bomb, said Kelly Rivera Nye, a port authority spokesman. The card was found aboard the plane to be used for Flight 6241 to Cincinnati, operated by Chautauqua Airlines.

Peru toasts al Qaeda with poisonous bubbly
Sat Dec 16, 2006
LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - Some Peruvian winemakers have ditched Santa Claus this festive season, instead turning to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to help their sales but authorities said the booze was unsafe to drink. Authorities in northern Peru this week uncovered a case of sparkling wine labelled "Bin Laden Champagne" that illegal local brewers hoped to sell at Christmas fairs for $1 a bottle.
"Anyone who drunk the stuff would probably be seriously ill," said Carlos Segura, a town hall official in Chiclayo north of Lima, who had no idea why the wine was named after Bin Laden. "We tipped it into the sewers," he added.
Three people were hospitalized today with allergic-type symptoms possibly linked to a suspicious package received by employees of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

North Korea may stage second nuclear test
Saturday, December 16, 2006
SEOUL: North Korea may stage a second nuclear weapons test to strengthen its hand during upcoming negotiations on scrapping its nuclear programme, South Koreas new defence minister warned Friday. Kim Jang-Soo, a former army chief of staff, ordered the 650,000-strong military to step up combat-readiness to deter possible aggression from the North, the defence ministry said. We have to be thoroughly prepared to counter the possibility of a second or third nuclear test by North Korea and a possible hostile act by it in the process of negotiations over its nuclear weapons programme, Kim said in a written order to his troops.
The six-nation nuclear talks are set to resume in Beijing on Monday, 13 months after the North walked out. They involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia. The North staged its first nuclear test on October 9, sparking international condemnation and United Nations sanctions.

Rumsfeld: U.S. at Time of Great Consequence
By Sgt. Sara Wood, USA
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2006 The war on terrorism is a difficult task, but it is not hopeless or without purpose, outgoing Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld addresses the audience during his farewell parade at the Pentagon on Dec. 15. Photo by Cherie A. Thurlby '(Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.
Breaking convention one final time in his farewell speech at the Pentagon ceremony in his honor, Rumsfeld spoke not about his accomplishments of the past, but the challenges of the future.
This is a time of great consequence, Rumsfeld said. Our task is to make the right decisions today so that future generations will not have to make much harder decisions tomorrow.
Speaking with the perspective of the only defense secretary to have served for two presidents in two different centuries, Rumsfeld warned that today, just as in the Cold War, weakness is provocative to Americas enemies. Todays world is one of unstable dictators, weapons proliferators, rogue regimes, and friends and allies with declining defense investment and capabilities, he said. This environment creates vulnerabilities, he added, and requires even more U.S. dedication.
Today it should be clear that not only is weakness provocative, but the perception of weakness on our part can be provocative as well, he said. A conclusion by our enemies that the United States lacks the will or the resolve to carry out missions that demand sacrifice and demand patience is every bit as dangerous as an imbalance of conventional military power.
The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, awakened Americans to the global extremist movement, Rumsfeld pointed out. This movement has tens of thousands of adherents who believe it is their calling to kill Americans and other free people, and it cannot be ignored, he said.
It may well be comforting to some to consider graceful exits from the agonies and indeed the ugliness of combat, but the enemy thinks differently, Rumsfeld said. Under the president's leadership, this country made a decision to confront the extremist ideology of hatred that spawned a worldwide movement and to take the fight to the enemy. The alternative was inaction and defense, a pattern that history has shown only emboldens the enemy.
The war on terror will be long, and even after five years, it is still complex and unfamiliar, Rumsfeld said. Though Americans have an understandable dislike for war, they also have a grit and determination that has carried them through all past conflicts, he said.
It is with confidence that I say that America's enemies should not confuse the American people's distaste of war, which is real and which is understandable, with a reluctance to defend our way of life, he said. Enemy after enemy in our history have made that mistake to their regret.
Addressing Americas servicemembers, Rumsfeld urged them not to forget that the U.S. example is a message of hope for people around the world. America is not what's wrong with this world, he said Ours is a message that was heard and fought for in places like Berlin, Prague, Riga, Tokyo, Seoul, San Salvador, Vilnius, and Warsaw, and that message is even now being whispered in the coffee houses and the streets of Damascus and Tehran and Pyongyang. The great sweep of human history is for freedom, and America is on freedom's side.
Rumsfeld leaves office Dec. 18, when defense secretary designee Robert Gates takes over.
""Today it should be clear that not only is weakness provocative, but the perception of weakness on our part can be provocative as well, he said. This movement has tens of thousands of adherents who believe it is their calling to kill Americans and other free people, and it cannot be ignored, he said."
