:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

Paris Police Detain 8 French Terror Suspects Deported by Egypt

Friday, December 08, 2006

PARIS — Paris police on Friday detained eight French terror suspects who were expelled by Egypt, judicial officials said.

Egyptian authorities expelled the eight Frenchmen along with two Belgians Thursday on a charter flight for Brussels, an official at Cairo's international airport said.

The men, along with an American, another French citizen and an unknown number of Egyptians and Arabs from other countries, were arrested late last month by Egyptian authorities for allegedly belonging to an Islamist terror cell plotting attacks. The ninth French citizen and the American remain in Egyptian custody.

The French suspects were brought from Brussels to Paris by car. Upon their arrival early Friday morning, the Paris police's anti-terrorist division immediately took the men into custody for questioning. Under French law, they can be held without charges for up to four days.

The suspects' arrival in France coincides with the visit of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is in Paris Friday for talks with French President Jacques Chirac and to inaugurate an exhibition of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

The eight suspects are between 25 and 35 years old. Roughly half of them are known to French police.

Egyptian officials said the suspects were allegedly living in Egypt under the guise of studying Arabic and Islamic studies and had formed a militant cell that was plotting attacks.

Egypt has witnessed a string of suicide terror attacks in recent years at Sinai Peninsula tourist resorts and operates under emergency laws, which gives the government wide powers to detain suspects without charging them. The laws have been in place since the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981, despite growing opposition to them from both inside and outside the country.

Note post #20. First it was reported that he had ties to AQ. Story later changed to a "lone wolf" scenario.

Terror threat shuts down Asian summit by Karl Wilson

CEBU, Philippines (AFP) - The Philippines has abruptly called off a high-profile summit of Asian leaders, blaming a looming tropical storm even as foreign ministry sources said terror threats were the reason.

Friday's cancellation came a day after six nations including the United States issued a warning for Cebu, the resort island hosting the summit, due to threats of a terrorist strike. Australia said attack plans were in the "final stages".........

An Illinois man plotted to set off hand grenades at shopping malls in a holiday season terror campaign that was thwarted by federal investigators. According to an FBI affidavit, Derrick Shareef, 22, told a confidential source that he wanted to "commit violent acts of jihad," and spoke of killing judges and blowing up public buildings. A copy of the affidavit can be found below. Shareef told the snitch that he sought "to disrupt Christmas," adding that, "I swear by Allah man, I'm down for it too, I'm down for the cause, I'm down to live for the cause and die for the cause, man." The document does not further describe the supposed cause of Shareef, who was named today in a federal felony complaint. Shareef is quoted telling the FBI source, "I probably would have eventually ended up stabbing the s*** outta some Jews or something. Just stabbing them n***** with a steak knife.... Because during that war with Hezbollah, man, I had already started to look at synagogues out here..." (11 pages)

"Ocean City police told NBC 10 the Navy is doing gunnery practice from ships off the coast."

I appreciate the update.

"BTW this is the only update that is stating this as the cause. Other news was saying that military had no known operations in the area."

OPINION: It could be a case of lazy reporters vs 1 reporter that finally got an answer.

"The Jihad: We're All in This Together"
By Don Feder
FrontPageMagazine.com | December 8, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Don Feder delivered the following speech to the Americans for A Safe Israel National Conference (“America And Israel – The Present Danger”) held in New York City on December 3, 2006. – The Editors.

You have a problem. It’s a problem shared by Jews in Hebron, Serbs in Kosovo, Hindus in the Kashmir, Catholics in Lebanon, and Americans walking the streets of New York.

Consider the inter-connectedness of the following incidents, all of which took place in the past few months:

In Indonesia, three Christian schoolgirls were beheaded.
In Iraq, a Syrian Orthodox priest was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered.
In Somalia, a nun was shot to death as she left the hospital where she worked, tending the sick and dying.
In Lebanon, just days ago, a cabinet minister was assassinated.
In Britain, authorities uncovered a conspiracy in which native-born Brits plotted to blow up several trans-Atlantic flights, killing as many as 3,000.
In Afghanistan, suicide bombers are at work again.
In Iraq, they never stopped. Additionally, the week before last, a group of worshippers were abducted from a mosque, doused with gasoline and burned to death in what’s described as “sectarian violence.”
In France, a high school philosophy teacher is in hiding after very credible death threats following publication of a September 19th commentary in Le Figaro.
Some 139 people died in riots in Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan, and Afghanistan – following the publication of Danish cartoons.
Europe is experiencing the worst wave of anti-Semitic violence since Kristallnacht. The former director of the U.S. Holocaust Museum reports there an average of 12 assaults a day on Jews in Paris.
In Kosovo, 90 percent of Serbs gave been ethnically cleansed from the province since 1999. The rest live in a state of siege.
In Mumbai, India, a series of blasts killed almost 200.
In Gaza, terrorists recently celebrated the latest “ceasefire” by raining more rockets on southern Israel.
And the leader of more than a billion Catholics received death threats and demands that he convert after giving a speech in which he called for a balance of faith and reason, and quoted a 14th century Byzantine emperor.

What do the foregoing have in common?"

20 Terrorists Killed, Weapons Caches Destroyed

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2006 – Coalition forces killed 20 terrorists this morning while targeting al Qaeda terrorists in the Thar Thar area, military officials reported.

Coalition forces targeted the location based on intelligence reports that indicated associates with links to multiple al Qaeda in Iraq networks were operating in the area.

Ground forces were searching buildings at the targeted location when they began receiving heavy machine-gun fire from one of the buildings. The ground forces returned fire, killing two armed terrorists.

Despite efforts to subdue the remaining armed terrorists, officials said, coalition forces continued to be threatened by enemy fire, causing forces to call in close-air support. A coalition aircraft performed the air strike, resulting in 18 more armed terrorists killed.

During a search of the objective, coalition forces found multiple weapons caches consisting of AK-47s, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, anti-personnel mines, explosives, blasting caps and suicide vests. All these items were destroyed on site.

Coalition forces also found that two of the terrorists killed were women. Al Qaeda in Iraq has both men and women supporting and facilitating their operations, officials said.

Four Insurgents Captured; Leaders Discuss Security in Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2006 – Iraqi and coalition forces captured a senior al Qaeda in Iraq leader yesterday and detained three insurgents the previous day. Earlier this week, multinational leaders met in Tikrit to discuss security operations in Iraq.
Special Iraqi army forces with coalition advisors, captured a terrorist leader during a raid yesterday in Fallujah. The suspect had directed sniper, improvised-explosive-device, and car-bomb attacks against Iraqi security forces and helped abduct and kill several Iraqi police officers, military officials said.

The terrorist leader also directed an extensive murder and intimidation campaign and harbored other terrorist fighters. He was a senior al Qaeda in Iraq leader in the Anbar province and controlled several insurgent groups.

Minimal damage was done to the objective, and there were no Iraqi civilian or coalition forces casualties, military officials said.

A day earlier, Iraqi and coalition forces detained three suspected insurgents who were conducting an indirect fire attack on Forward Operating Base Gabe and endangering local civilians in Baqubah and destroyed three vehicles..

Coalition forces observed insurgents in a vehicle fleeing from the scene of the indirect-fire attack. The insurgents began driving erratically around the city, firing small arms and machine guns at innocent civilians. The insurgents stopped at an abandoned building, where they cross-loaded weapons and equipment with two other vehicles.

An air weapons team engaged and destroyed two vehicles as they attempted to flee, and the team returned to the abandoned building to destroy the third. Air reconnaissance observed secondary explosions from the first two vehicles. Iraqi and Coalition ground forces searched the abandoned building and detained three suspects. The detainees were taken to a secure location for questioning.

“This is another example of the terrorists' and violent insurgents' disregard for the welfare and safety of all the people of Diyala," said Army Col. David W. Sutherland, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, and the senior U.S. officer in the Diyala Province. "Their hatred is spread through the streets with no regard for those that respect peace."

Elsewhere, senior Iraqi and coalition force leaders met Dec. 6 at Forward Operating Base Speicher to discuss the way ahead for security in northern Iraq and future operations in Multinational Division North, military officials said. Iraqi army and police commanders from Ninewa, Kirkuk, Salah Ad Din and Diyala provinces met with their coalition counterparts and senior leaders from the Interior and Defense ministries to develop and coordinate plans for future security operations.

"This is a great day for all the leaders in MNDN," Army Brig. Gen. Mick Bednarek, deputy commanding general of operations for Task Force Lightning, said. "The opportunity for leaders from all the provinces in MNDN to discuss their strategy is tremendous. It allows all leaders to take away lessons learned by their counterparts."

The daylong conference strengthened the relationship between the Iraq security force and coalition forces, allowing their leaders to focus on integrating and synchronizing ongoing security operations, military officials said.

"These are difficult and complicated matters that affect millions of Iraqis," Bednarek said. "The dynamics of security and stability in northern Iraq are going to change the future of MNDN. It is in this room where all of these leaders have come together to discuss that future that some hard decisions will have to be made."

More security meetings between Iraq security force and coalition force leaders are expected, military officials said.

Earlier this week, soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division’s Company A, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment discovered an improvised explosive device south of their patrol base along the bank of the Euphrates River on Dec. 5.

After examining the IED, soldiers searched the surrounding buildings in the area for terrorist suspects linked to the bomb. In the bedroom of a nearby house, soldiers discovered a bag with IED-making materials that matched the device found on the Euphrates bank. The patrol arrested the owner of the house and confiscated the rest of the IED-making materials. The suspect was detained for further questioning.

That same day, soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division’s Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, discovered a car bomb near Mahmudiyah. The car bomb was composed of 40 57 mm anti-aircraft rounds planted in the doors of a red compact car. An explosive ordnance disposal team detonated the explosives. No one was injured in the incident.
