Watch Rummy start talking crap about how Bush wasn't allowing him to run the war as it should be in a new book coming out soon (with a multi million dollar advance for Rummy).

I don't believe that.

Not so bad really... Rummy is getting to be an old man and cant blame him for all the crap they through at him.

There's no way any war can be won when we can't even "offend" the enemy. Rummy was being forced to follow the democrats politically correct war strategy. That's the only reason we haven't won this war already.

Dr. Gates is currently president at Texas A&M University. What makes him particularly qualified for Sec of Defense? I have nothing against him, I'm just wondering.

Rumsfeld will be targetted by the investigations. The President would have had to invoke Executive Privilege to shield him from testifying and that would have perpetuated the lightning rod for 2008.

Yes, that is also how I understand this.

A lot of posters ask why didn't he resign before the election. The reason is of course that the President didn't want him to leave. This is the first effect of the election. Rumsfeldt knew that he would not be able to carry on with his job, since he would be a constant target of investigations, and be forced to testify in end less hearings. So like the man he is he resigned so that the President would be able to nominate someone else and get that person approved before the Senate has a Democratic majority.

As I see it Rumsfeldt didn't resign (if it is true that he has resigned) for the good of the GOP or for his own sake but to make sure that the Defence Forces would not be hurt by the political game that Democrats inevitably will start now.

...who's the next SecDef going to be?

If he weren't enjoying retirement so much....Norman Schwarzkopf. However, I don't think he would do it.

Hate to disagree but after what he did with the BRAC -- was part of three bases that disagreed with his decision and we won. They used flawed data to get them closed. He has been bad for Air Force Materiel Command and the AF and his decision to embed reporters is costing us right now in Iraq and has cost us.

I heard two people who just got back from Iraq last night and others who are blaming the media that Rumsfeld has refused to take out of the units for a lot of their problems in Iraq. Every step they take is detailed by a reporter with a mic shoved in their face and pictures streamed back to the US with spin.

As a loyal member of the AF community knowing what he has done to the AF in recent years, it was time for him to go and you will hear cheers throughout the AF as this gets out.

I would imagine I speak for the Navy air wings as well since he has also been after them.

Too many reporters on the field of battle with pictures streamed into our living rooms has cost us in Iraq and he is the one responsible.

Oh yes it is almost assured that Iraq will end just like Vietname did years ago. Vietnamization then Iraqization now. Islam wins West loses. Look out Europe you are next and the USA will not get into it.

To: who knows what evil?

Yes, but first, the 'evil' Rove must get President Bush to nominate someone the Democrats will object to, then he can nominate Lieberman.

Just heartsick. Looks like W started on this change before the weekend. Rummy .. what a great man and innovator. He's been a singularly original leader, and I love him. I just hate to see him leave like this, and I don't think we can even imagine how much he did for this country nor how much it will miss him, his devotion and unique skills. Go with God, Rummy ...THANK YOU for all the remarkable things you've done. You'll always be a hero to me.

God bless you, President Bush.

So that story is basically saying the AP guy saw Rummy go to work today and Rummy didn't say anything to him. Suddenly it becomes ' Rummy has no plans to step down'.

See, you gotta know how the AP scumballs work.
