MSM is partly to blame but when you let things drag on because you use half assed measures in a war then they get the upper hand eventually

I hear ya. If we weren't in the war to win the flippin' thing, why were we there? You shouldn't go to war without the intention to give it all you've got. All out, pedal to the metal, until your enemy lies in complete ruins. Instead, we won't bomb mosques, won't bomb funerals, won't bomb where the Iraqi government says not to, etc.
