AP:

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a key target of Iraq war critics, gave no indication Wednesday that he planned to step down in the wake of Democratic midterm election gains, his chief spokesman said. Eric Ruff, the Pentagon press secretary, said he participated in meetings with Rumsfeld on Wednesday morning and heard no talk of changing war strategies or of Rumsfeld leaving his post.

ABC reporting that AP is saying Rummy will step down.

this is just so sad. Several weeks ago I remember Bush saying that Rumsfield would stay ON throughout Bush's term in office!!!!!!! If Bush caves now, we will all lose hope.

Let's see Rumsfeld's successes: 1)Captured Bin Laden at Tora Bora. 2) Assured complete defeat of Taliban in Afghanistan so that they wouldn't keep hanging around mucking up the works. 3) Ensured relative security for troops operating in Iraq by aggressively destroying and instilling fear in the radical populations in Iraq. Oh wait, none of those happened.

1) Bin Laden was allowed to escape because we had so few troops on the ground that local warlords were allowed to dictate military strategy. 2) See #1. 3) Too few troops and putting existing troops in a defensive rather than offensive role ensures what is going on in Iraq right now.

When your doctrine is to use underwhelming, rather than overwhelming, force, you will not win wars. It is the same doctrine that lost us Vietnam, and Bush won't let himself become LBJ to Rumsfeld's McNamara.

Which guy are you referring to? Are you saying that our President wants this war won at all costs but the Secretary Of Defense is the one pulling punches?

Exactly - Rumsfeld is just a bureaucrat - he enacts whatever policy Bush & Cheney & Rice tell him to enact.

Dubyah is the one who flinched, and decided not to visit Armageddon upon the Muslims, and the result is that the Muslims were emboldened and realized that they could "win" this thing at the ballot box, just like the Russkies & Chicoms & North Koreans did in the Korean "War" [really the Korean "Nation-Building Exercise"], and just like the Russkies & Chicoms & North Vietnamese did in the Vietnam "War" [really the Vietnamese "Nation-Building Exercise"].

The irony of all of this is that Dubyah forcefully renounced the whole idea of nation-building exercises during the 2000 debates with Al Gore, and if he had only stuck to those promises, then everything would be hunky-dory today.

Wasn't it within the last week or so that the President said he still had confidence in Mr. Rumsfield, blah-blah-blah...the usual BS?

I guess we should learn that when the President comes out with such huge amounts of praise for someone, that person's days are numbered.
