(CBS) MALIBU Celebrities and coastal residents held a protest in Malibu against a plan to build a massive, floating liquefied natural gas terminal off the coast of Malibu and Oxnard.

Actor Pierce Brosnan and big wave surfer Laird Hamilton hosted the "Paddle Out Protest" at Surfrider Beach, near Malibu Pier in an effort to stop the BHP Billiton LNG terminal.

Opponents claim storing liquefied natural gas poses a danger since it's highly flammable and explosive. The terminal would also draw huge tankers to the site from foreign countries several times per week and has the potential for significant and irreversible impact to the coast's environment, health and safety, they say.

It's flammable? Well, duuuhh. But it's on the water, so what's the problem? Where would the tankers be pulling up? There is a terminal on the coast right now, that most people don't even know that isn a refueling spot, because tankers don't pull up. The water is too shallow for a maybe 10-15 miles out to the place where the tankers off load. I'll bet it's the same kind of thing.

Now, if Noam Chomsky or Hugo Chavez said it was a good thing these people would be all over it.

I spent the whole afternnon at the Beach Cafe in Paradise Cove today. We discussed the LNG project, and spoke to our fellow locals.......they don't really give a rats a$$ about the project. They are worried about their 5-25,000,000 dollar VIEWS!!

Who pressed the Report Abuse button on poster: confabulated?

The guy is obvoiusly not well informed, and an just an emotional moroon.

We could have had fun picking apart his presumptive assumptions. And enjoyed the ZOT process as well.

They're also opposed to wind farms floating off the coast. The Beautiful People think energy is created out of literally nothing!
