Slovakia to open labour market to Bulgarians, Romanians

Bratislava- Slovakia will open its labour market to the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania that will probably become new EU members early next year, the Slovak government decided today.

The government said in its resolution that it does not expect a marked increase in the interest of the two countries' citizens in jobs in Slovakia.

"Slovakia is not an attractive state like other traditional target countries of migrants," the Slovak foreign and labour ministers said.

It is expected that the two countries' interest in the Slovak labour market will be also decreased by the language barrier and that citizens of the two Balkan countries will be more interested in jobs in EU more advanced countries.

The government said that the opening of the labour market could, on the contrary, help the Slovak ethnic minority of about 17,000 in Romania.

Its members could help cover the lack of workers in certain professions in Slovakia.

The Czech Republic does not yet count with closing its labour market to Bulgarians and Romanians once they are admitted to the EU, but it has not yet made a definitive decision.

We should do the same. However I'm worried a bit about big amount of Gypsies over there.

I can't imagine that we wouldn't do the same. They will get free travel status in the whole EU, so Gypsies will go to richer areas. If a labor market is opened or not doesn't matter for them, they don't use to work anyway.
