Corker says Ford part of political 'machine'

MEMPHIS, Tenn. In their first debate tonight, Bob Corker went after Harold Ford Junior's family while Ford accused Corker of flip-flopping on abortion. Republican Corker said his Democratic opponent for the U-S Senate was from a family engaged in--quote--"machine-type politics."

Ford, a Memphis congressman, said he loved his family and asked Corker not to bring them into the debate.

Corker, a former Chattanooga mayor, had not brought up the Ford family so far in the campaign. Ford's uncle is a former state legislator awaiting trial in a federal bribery case.

Corker also criticized Ford's votes against a ban on late term abortions. Ford responded that he has changed his position on abortion and said Corker has flip-flopped on abortion in the past.

I can understand him not wanting the most corrupt political family in Tennessee history being exposed to the voters.

Amazing, he flip flops on abortion, he flip flops on whether or not he is a lawyer. I guess he was a lawyer before he wasn't one....

The Ford family is the Kennedy family of Tennessee or the Daleys from Chicago or Landreuis from New Orleans.

Besides that, Harold is a confirmed bachelor, even Don Imus thinks he is gay.

Easy, steady, big fella! If he is as you suggest we'll never find out about it. Only GOP strays are fodder for speculation in the MSM.

From the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

Junior still dancing around issue of abortion

...Politicians, especially those in tight races, are all about setting the record straight. In fact, in one of his campaign ads, Ford says sternly that he won't let former Chattanooga mayor Bob Corker, the Republican candidate, make him out to be something he's not.

So you might think Ford would be eager to erase any gray areas on an issue as divisive as abortion. You'd be wrong.

The Ford camp is more than comfortable with the ambiguity, and in fact, the congressman is trying to capitalize on the confusion. He tells both sides what he thinks they want to hear, hoping the right and the left never get together to compare notes.

How can this race be so close? Do you think that the polls are way off somehow?

I am praying for Divine intervention!

Just saw jake ford's ad this moring, it was apple pie..in his case pecan, with a crossing guard who showed up for work every moring.....he's as smooth as his brother junior..good looking..and moved back from kool-aid land to run for junior's seat. Strange both mayors king willie and prince ac wharton are supporting state sen. steve cohen.

Having lived in Hammond, IN a mere 30 miles or so from Chicago I can well attest to the fact the Ford family is identical to the Daley family. The occupy seats on both the city and county governing boards, had a seat in the State Senate..until john ford got to greedy, and his sister's supporters tried to steal the election for her and she got bounced. But I fully expect they will crank out the machine which buses voters to the poll for her big time this election to be sure she gets the seat 'God' anointed her to.

Some of us thought Corker did much better.
Here's the live thread on the debate:

I think Corker did an outstanding job. Ford, I probably will catch flack for this, but he seems to be an Obama wannabe. He complains that the Bush administration has created the largest government in US history, yet this is exactly what he and his camp want, he complains about the Iraq War, he complains complains complains but offers (right in line with other Dims) NO SOLUTIONS! Additionally, you can check his voting record--check out the overwhelming number of recordings of did not vote. He claims he will fix this and that, but he doesn't even vote way more than half the time.
Rasmussen held that before the debate, Ford held 5 percentage point lead over Corker--48% to 43%.
