Drinking Cabernet Sauvignon may help prevent Alzheimer's disease...

Bah!... I bet they didn't even test MD 20/20.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of 'cure'... I do think there's a lot people can do to reduce risks. Working in the nursing home industry, I just secretly wonder how much of AD can be prevented by leading a happy, healthy life that is stress free, etc. You're right. It should be studied more but it's just not getting done because it's called 'old timer's' disease and this society thinks of sick, elderly people as an inconvenience.

The nanny-staters will wind up making sure that a disclaimer is inserted to the effect: "Of course, experts caution that this research is only preliminary, and that people should not take up drinking alcohol"

Somebody needs to tell MADD.

No, wait. They want a bunch of brain-dead acolytes.

Hardly. Yopu liver is quite up to handling a glass of wine a day. People who wring out their livers are drinking many drinks per day or repeatedly bingeing.

I drink my glass of burgundy every morning before I go to bed. It helps me sleep. I work nights and have never really become used to it. I still have a daytime body.

It must have been FUN at your house growing up!

Fun hardly describes it. I was making martinis for dad and scotch & water for my by age 5. Three martinis and endless retelling of the same sea stories. Every night. My sister and I weren't permitted to leave the table at dinner until my dad was ready to leave. That was after the wine was gone. It was a chore to get my home work done between the end of dinner and bedtime.

My wife endured similar circumstances in her house. I drink a glass of beer once a month at Applebee's with a good steak. The rest of the time I prefer nice clean water with a little lime juice.

My dad polished off 3 martinis before dinner and a bottle of red wine with dinner most of the years I was growing up.

Ack! Martinis are like a woman's breasts...one is not enough and three is too many.

If wine consumption or other moderate consumption of beverage alcohol is beneficial, then why do teetotaling Mormons have better health than other groups in society? Predominantly Mormon Utah regularly is at or near the top of lists of states of health and longevity. Mormons are not ethnically distinct from other Americans of Northern European origin, nor do they observe dietary laws as observant Jews or Muslims do.

Good health is the result of many factors, diet, exercise, and nutrition being among the most important.

Actually genetics is the most important. Other factors help.

Yikes THREE martinis??? I think a bottle has diminishing returns though. Sorry about your dad :(

Dad was sliding downhill slowly. The shuffling gait, inability to complete sentences and constant loss of ordinary items such as eye glasses were telling symptoms. He still had his driver's license. He was given to starting arguments, then hours later would have no memory of what he had done.

The big fires in 2003 left lots of ash on southern California. Dad was sweeping up around the pool on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Some of the ash got into his lungs and set off a chemical pneumonia. He entered the hospital on Friday. By Saturday a stroke wiped out his mental function. He didn't recognize anyone. He passed on Dec 17th. It was a rapid demise instead of years of meltdown from Alzheimer's.

My sister's mother-in-law spent 8 years in a nursing home as Alzheimer's took its toll. She just passed last month.

Do you suppose that grape juice might do the same thing? DHLA also seems to cure Alzheimers, but it will never be prescribed for it because nobody is going to pay for the elaborate testing that is required to make it legal, simply because there is no money in it.

Is that the 64-ounce short glass, or the full 96 ?

I dunno. What's the difference?
