This is all so unfair! The US Army has too many accurate weapons systems already. This puts them at an unfair advantage over less advanced and capable enemies!

The word you're looking for is "Disproportionate", used heavily on CNN during the recent war with Hezbollah.

After the latest Iraq experience, I think the plan is to keep heavy tanks around indefinitely.
But as the Islamofascists (who we'll still be fighting 50 years from now) get better anti-tank missiles, we'll improve the technology against them.

Surrounding Marines is a really dumb thing to do.

Yep. It's like pulling a gun on someone...you better be ready to shoot!

Leo-2 is theoretically good, but untested. Sand ingress problems with the Challenger were quickly fixed and during Gulf War 2 it had the highest reliability rating. It's British 'chobham' armor is stronger that the British 'chobham' armor we fit to M1's. Challenger holds the record for longest kill by a tank at 5100 meters with a conventional APFSDS 'Charm' DU round fired in the Gulf at a T55.

When I lived in England we regularly liased with US and British units operating M1's and CH2 in Germany. They were evenly matched and impressed our M1 boys with their superb off-road comfort at speed. The only CH2 ever destroyed was done so by friendly fire from another CH2. Junk my ass.

"5.4 miles? Hit within inches? Seek, acquire and target on its own?"

25 years ago a relative of mine (now deceased) working in the defense industry explained the concept of "smart weapons" this way: "imagine an artillery shell being fired over the battlefield and it being able to see a target and be able to distinguish between it and decoys that surround it".

That was science fiction to me back then. Interesting to see it finally was developed. Can you imagine the science fiction weapons that will exist 25 years from now?

The M1A2 and the challenger 2 will trounce any soviet err russian tank including the T-90.

The problem is that the "anti-tank" defense capability of the enemy trumps this in that (as in the lateste in Lebanon) they have a more accurate delivery system. It is a terrorist with an RPG who is itching to meet those 72 whores.

I think the major advancement here that most of the above posts seem to miss is that this was done out of "line-of-sight." This means that the Abrams can now destroy a tank that can't even see who is firing on it.

The thing being tested is not the M1 or T-72 tank. It is the weapon system. The munition will be fired from any 120mm gun, not just the M1A1 or M1A2. Primary launch platform will be an FCS vehicle.

Yep, smart munitions. Some of the soviets love to hype up their abilities as usual(always have and always will I guess). They always lose on the real battlefield. Let them dream the fools dream I guess.

To heck it isn't! The only tarbegs I was ever able to hit with a tank gun were stationary. Those moving tarbegs are really hard to hit!

Aw, c'mon now. English is a second language to Kronos. Attack his ideas but don't attack his spelling. I bet his English is better than your Hungarian.

Indeed. So, we have an UAV sighting targets on the battlefield, and enemy targets are consequently being taken out by a US tank and the best thing the enemy can say is "Somewhere within a 5 mile radius, the US has a tank".

That's pretty sweet.

Wars in the future, especially by third world countries will no longer be about territory.

Having terrorists and the media as accomplices, all a defeated army has to do is show dead and injured innocents to the public and the war will come to a dead halt.

If the Israel/Hezzy conflict didn't teach us anything, nothing will.

Massive firepower only works if it is assumed that the media will interfere and the invading army and administration has the stomach to ignore the propaganda and do the job.

That AT-11 will hit a stationary tank, but it has almost no chance of hitting a tank moving above 15 mph. As a former M1A1 Marine Tank Platoon Commander, I hit stationary targets at 4300 meters with the M1's gun, which is easy to reload compared to an AT-11 missle.

You may have posted pictures, but there was no HTML in your post. Regarding your insult, I am a Christian first, family man second, American third, and conservative Republican fourth. I honorably served my country for many years in the Special Forces on an A-Team. One thing I hate is liars and those who distort the truth, and when that is Russia, Russians, or even Americans then I will fault them. I do not agree with many things Russia does on the world scene, but explaining why they do something is not the same as approving of their actions. However, I despise conspiracy theorists who are so obsessed with their views they lie and deceive not only themselves, but others, and even their evil rhetoric even causes wars. These individuals are totally intolerant, and those who do such things are opposed to everything Christian.

If a Democrat states or does something wrong that does not mean all Americans believe or do that, and likewise the same is true with Russia and Russians. To hear conspiracy theorists like yourself talk Ronald Reagan was a failure, because the fall of the Iron Curtain was a KGB planned event, it wasn't. It wasn't a KGB plot to raise the price of gas to Ukraine, but simply stopping selling them gas at below Russia's cost. Just this Sunday a Marine Colonel mentioned to me, with a smile, that not only are Russia and the US working close in the GWOT, but also in many other areas. The Russian media is not controlled like CT lie. Russians watch CNN, Fox News, and many other channels. The also have the Internet as we do here. I could go on and on. However, here is a picture taken at the Beslan school massacre, which speaks volumes of how Russia feels about America. You have no shame.

I definitely appreciate where your coming from with regards to 2nd Amendment/gay marriage etc. concerns... Those are issues I see as potential dealbreakers as well... Though, alot of those issues would need to go through Congress to make the changes we find pause with, though most of these issues are also dealt with on a state, not federal level...

I have two young boys, 8 and 6... My biggest fear and concern, definitely not my only concern, but my biggest is their safety... That they grow up in a safe society, as safe as it's possible obviously... If given the choice of a Guiliani nomination, I'd have to vote for him... Ofcourse, by no means my ideal candidate, but I'm very scared of the alternative... Again, this just being my opinion, those people, who I'm convinced are good and decent people, are choosing the wrong time in history to "teach the Republican Party a lesson" by voting third party... The thought of what would be the aftermath of having another liberal President scares me too much at this stage, that's all... I totally do get the thought process though...
