I can trace my surname to Carlisle, near the England-Scotland border, but that's the extent of my knowledge. Am I descended from Celts? Romans? Norsemen? Danes? Saxons? Normans? I have no idea, but I assume I'm a mongrel of sorts. Britain was invaded again and again over the last two millenia, and I'm sure most Brits, let alone those whose ancestors left the island centuries ago, have long since lost track.

Get your DNA tested. It doesn't cost that much and it's really interesting.
I thought the Welsh came from central Europe in what is now Hungary...
All of the above, and more besides, same as me. Probably even Africans from the Roman regiments that we know garrisoned Hadrian's Wall nearly 2000 years ago.
Your history sounds as confusing as mine. My father's side of the family claims German descent but time and again when I look up the family name I come up with a coat of arms for Wales. Go figure...
Even when I was in Germany I could find no family geneaologies though one of my uncles claims he found it in Eastern Germany though I was there after the wall came down and there was still no information available on that.
In the end though I am definitely a mutt. XD
