Dear Fellow Texans,
The greatest threat Texans face today is the porous 1,200 mile Texas-Mexico border. It is viewed as a prime point of entry by terrorist organizations, criminal gangs, and drug traffickers. Despite this growing threat, Washington has failed to devote the necessary resources to secure our border and protect our communities.
Since they have chosen not to act, I have. Six months before the president announced National Guard soldiers would help secure the border, Texas had already made that decision. We are leveraging the National Guard’s unique capabilities to support local law enforcement. We have substantially increased investigators and patrols along the border and created a new Border Security Operations Center to coordinate intelligence and assets in an 80,000 square mile region. State trooper strike teams, covert surveillance units, canine tracking teams, DPS helicopters, and the Texas Civil Air Patrol are helping border sheriffs and police stop illegal activity. With the participation of private landowners, we are posting surveillance cameras at criminal hotspots used to illegally enter this country. And, I have asked the legislature to dedicate $100 million to continue funding these initiatives, until the federal government starts enforcing our sovereign border with Mexico.
In order to get Washington to step up to the plate, I am asking you to sign the Border Security Petition, forward it to your family and friends and encourage them to do the same. I will then forward it on to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist so he hears – loud and clear – that Texans want, deserve and demand federal action to secure our border with Mexico.

That said I think we should handle this ourselves. Once you start asking Washington for help it gets messy. We should just send them a bill.
When it is all said and done, we may indeed have to "do the job no one else will do".
I guess Rick Perry wants to avoid a run-off.
That's next. And long overdue.
Texas does not have run-offs for gubernatorial elections. It is winner take all. He wants to avoid losing to Kinky or Strayhorn.
Oklahoma guardsmen were stationed at both ends of the free bridge, and Texas papers spoke of an "invasion." Finally, on August 6, 1931, the Texas injunction was permanently dissolved, the Oklahoma guardsmen were withdrawn to enforce martial law in the Oklahoma oilfields, and the bridge controversy was laid to rest. The bridge was dynamited on December 6, 1995, to make room for a new one.
There no run offs in the General elections in TX.

HOUSTON (AP) - A 32-year-old man was arraigned Friday in Houston in the slaying the day before of a Houston police officer.
The suspect was identified during the arraignment as Juan Leonardo Quintero. He's jailed without bail on a capital murder charge in Thursday's slaying of Officer Rodney Johnson.
Investigators say the 12-year police veteran was shot four times in the back of the head during what had begun as a routine traffic stop near Hobby Airport in southeastern Houston. He died a short time later at a Houston hospital.
Police say the 40-year-old officer had stopped a pickup truck with two people inside and had handcuffed and placed the driver in the back seat his patrol car when he was shot.
Investigators aren't sure why the man was removed from the truck, nor how he came to have a gun. However, they say the suspect had no ID.
Johnson was an Army veteran and former corrections officer. As a member of the department's Southeast Gang Task Force, Johnson earned two Lifesaving Awards and one Medal of Valor from the state of Texas.

Juan Leonardo Quintero, 32, has been jailed without bond after being charged with capital murder in the death of decorated Houston Police Officer Rodney Johnson.

Quintero is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday before Judge Joan Campbell. Johnson, 40, was pronounced dead Thursday night at Ben Taub Hospital after being shot multiple times with a 9mm handgun, according to prosecutors.
The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. following a routine traffic stop on Braniff Street near Hobby Airport. Johnson had just handcuffed Quintero and put him in the back of a patrol car. According to prosecutors, Quintero pulled a gun from his waistband and started firing, hitting Johnson several times.
Meantime, local law enforcement sources tell KTRH News that Quintero is in the U.S. illegally and has an extensive criminal history. KTRH News has learned Quintero was charged with indecency with a child in 1998 and driving while intoxicated in 1995.
Officials say as many a three individuals who had been in Quintero's truck fled the scene. The suspect was still in the patrol car when other officers arrived in response to Johnson's distress call. Shell casings and the gun were recovered from the back seat, according to court papers.
Johnson's widow, Joslyn, is also on the force. They have five children.
The 100 Club is issuing the family a check for $10,000 to help with immediate expenses. Club Executive Director Rick Hartley says the organization will help the family financially as well as provide college tuition assistance for all five Johnson children.
