This story serves as a reminder of why, quite frankly, the big tent totally blows, and why Country Club "republicanism" is lame. Although it might not win a popularity contest, Goldwaterism is guaranteed to weed out the limp wristed early on and often. I'd rather weed 'em out before they get in, than put up with Jeffordsismic barf outs.

I think theirs is an error of arrogance. At this point, they are convinced that Democrats have made themselves irrelevant. Republicans are running on a single issue. In 2004 it was gay marriage. In 2006 it's going to be immigration. But each time they use this single-issue approach the outrage factor is losing traction. And they are not changing their playbook to reflect a changing electorate. People are mad about real issues: The economy is bad, health insurance is incredibly expensive, gas prices are through the roof and you can't respond to that with a “blame the Mexicans” message. At some point, you have to address the issues that mean something to the average person. They haven't gotten there yet. And they haven't had to. They've been able to rest on their laurels for a very long time.

This guy used to be a conservative? Yeah, right. I think he just figured out that he can get money from liberals by saying what they want to hear.

Missed this one...

We have 12 Iraq war veterans running for Congress as Democrats and one running as a Republican. That tells you something

Yeah, it tells us that the Democrats got out of the military ASAP while those who actually believed in the mission re-upped for another tour.

I really think this guy is just in it to scam liberals.

Maybe he was a conservative, maybe he wasn't. He says what Rush's conservative ideas sound good in theory only. Like tax cuts. Does this moron realize that 9/11 knock our economy for a loop?
If he claims he wasn't a great thinker when he was a ditto-head, he certainly hasn't become one now.

If you've ever wondered what goes on inside the mind of a Rush Limbaugh fan, let us introduce you to Jim Derych. For more than a decade, Derych was a loyal, self-assured Limbaugh follower—a so-called dittohead—who uncritically accepted ...

That's all of it that I read. The mind-numbed robot theme is old, worn and ridiculous. Just childish propaganda.

Unprincipled reprobate. Else how could he 'switch' from republican to democrat. Kind'a like Lucifer being 'good' or the tiger smiling.

I won't buy his book - I'll wait for the movie. I'm sure they'll make one before 2008.

This guy was NEVER a conservative. Come on, we all have certain beliefs that are part of who we are, convictions that are long held and not easily tossed out. This is a mole, pure and simple , a fake. His quips on each talk show host are the left talking points. Most of them have never even listened to a entire Rush show, or Hannity show etc. They just regurgitate the same lines like parrots.

He is dead wrong about Rush. First of all, Rush DOES only present one side of the argument. He presents the side that is not presented in the 100s of other media out there. If you totally disagree with Rush, you will agree with the NYT, the LAT, and the WaPo. And most TV news. So don't listen!

Second, Rush disagrees with the current administration often enough these days. But yes, I am sure Rush DOES feel that if we have to have any of these idiots in power in government, the Republican idiots are better than the Democrat ones.

Third, this author is only saying that some people change sides for various reasons. This guy decided to become a liberal, and mazel tov, have a good time with all that. There are a lot of people coming from the other side too. A Radical Son is a good book of a classic tale from 60s leftist to conservative, by David Horowitz.

Rush has personally converted thousands, I am sure. Not because we are mind-numbed. But because what the left has been saying doesn't make sense. We have plenty of problems with our current Republican leadership, and we are not living in ideal times in which to expand every detail of our ideology (taxes, shrinking government, etc). We are forced to focus on the WOT right now.

And believe me, we on the right SERIOUSLY WONDER how those on the left can believe what they believe. How can they seriously think Bush lied to get us into war, or that he is in Iraq for oil money?

This guy is the political equivalent of the "enlightened" formerly Christian atheists. They grow up in an environment where a set of beliefs is so pervasive that when it occurs to them to question the beliefs, and nobody conveniently at hand has immediately satisfactory answers, they jump to the conclusion that no such answers exist, and jump to the opposite extreme instead of taking it upon themselves to do the homework necessary to rationally examine and weigh the evidences. It's pure intellectual laziness.
