I find this so funny that we all have our panties in a bunch over this. I would suspect that most FREEPERS must have high blood pressure about worrying about these small details. There is no way that the DODDs system is anti-American. That is totally insane for anyone to say. I can walk right this minute to the school and discuss this with any parent, teacher, or administrator and they would laugh us out of the school. Changing the name for administrative purposes are not treasonist acts.

Indeed, my daughter is currently in a DODDS American High School, and the nonsense from Kaiserslautern is mind bogling.
I think that is acceptable. More people of different heritages might feel more welcome now, not like they have to feel like theyre just American, said the seventh-grader, who has a mixed heritage of Japanese, Puerto Rican, black and white.
Hillary voter. Hope she stays over there. She'll make a good citizen of the Hateamerican Empire.
On a lighter note, I think this is about terrorism, and lowering the profile of these (relatively exposed) schools.
Makes attacking it marginally less valuable because it doesn't have "American" in the name anymore.
Marginally.
But then, these guys will take any small protection they can get, is my guess.
Cheer up. It's a sign of success. In 1947, Europe was kitten-weak, and someone asked someone else what the Red Army would need to overrun Europe, and the someone else replied, "Boots."
We really did succeed. Our policy was to shore up Europe and get it healthy again, healthy enough "to sit up and spit in our eye" -- and we got what we bargained for. On top of that, the Red Army has retired to Mother Russia. Mission accomplished, job well done. So what if our presence there is less relevant now? It's a matter of time before our people are all called home, and we leave those schools to the Germans, Italians, and Spaniards to do with as they please.
i went to a dodds school 3 years (10-12 grade) and they are a joke. we left school during lunch and drank beer and came back, or walked out in middle of day to skip class.
You must have skipped out during the lesson on proper capitalization. :-)
the only thing i learned my last 3 years of high school was typing, i think ..This was in the late 80's, I can only imagine what dodds schools are like now.
ok i am bad, here is is
DoDDS
at least the o wasn't capital when i was in one.
That's not the only one! :-) The pronoun "I" is always capitalized and also the first word of a sentence. Cheers.
"The pronoun "I" is always capitalized and also the first word of a sentence. Cheers."
Did you know that when typing it is correct to put two spaces between the punctuation at the end of a sentence and the beginning of the next sentence, if they are in the same paragraph?
(DoDDS school typing class passing-grade student)
Thanks for the ping. Can they still have an American flag in these schools? Perhaps carefully hidden in a corner somewhere?
The particular barracks I was first stationed at in Germany, Merrell Barracks, was first optioned to become a home for asylum seekers- That was stopped when the local Nuernberg politicians realized that not only would they lose the MILLIONS of dollars we pumped into the local economy, but they would end up with thousands of penniless people, more crime, and problems. It ended up becoming partially privatized and partially German government- I can't say I blame them.
Just because I'm curious: have you been stationed overseas or anywhere that has been shut down or been returned? I remember when gentlemen would come to Merrell Barracks to see their old rooms they had after WWII- it was a big deal for them since most of the visitors were there right after the war when Nuernberg was completely under American control.
I'd love to take my son, or grandchildren, over to show them where I slept and kept my Army issued green blanket tucked on my bunk, with my duffle bags only a couple meters away on top of my wall-locker.
I'm now at Fort Devens, which has been nicely renamed by the Massachusetts Development people as simply "Devens", so they would attract more businesses and people to buy the old Officer quarters. I happen to work in the same building that I lived in for my technical training, but now we are surrounded by hotels, beer bottling buildings, etc. I will always be sad to see my old posts or buildings removed. I know it's a sign of progress, but the sentimental value of being a part of something that seemed to be permanent is gone.
Taking away the "Fort" from Devens was a slap in the face of all the soldiers who trained here since WWI and still train here. Much like taking "American" out of the school names for overseas schools is a slap in the faces of the half-million soldiers who fought for those countries to not be part of Germania and under the Nazis. I'm sure it would have been worse if the Nazis had won. Especially considering the pact Hitler had with Stalin...
I'll end with, again, acknowledging your great point- we were not supposed to be there forever. I'm also very proud to be, and have been, a pair of the "boots" needed to keep Western Europe free. I can't imagine any other profession that offers the sense of pride that wearing a US uniform does. Really.
have a great night!
More from the ashamed PC jagbags.
what a load of farm fertilizer! each of those schools is named for a particular reason - historical or otherwise.
if an alum wants to find out about their school or former classmates, there is no fewer than 5 websites they can check.
this is just the PC inmates at DoE trying to run the asylum.
alumnus.......
