This is not news. As a direct decendent of a true Viking, I'm probably related to half the peope on the planet.
Hey what can I say, they got around.
Where do you think the Irish got their red hair, the Scott's their frugalness and bad tempers, the English their common laws, the Russians an end to complete political anarchy, who opened trade routes with China and the Middle East before that guy Marco somebody and who first discovered "the New World"?
It wasn't the French. (and even the Normans were not French but the decendents of Vikings.)

Other way around on the red hair ~ Vikings picked that up from their trusty slave women brought direct from Ireland.
Of course when it came to Scotland, the Vikings acquired the redhair from their trusty Irish masters who were busy reducing the Picts to a fine nothingness.
I'm not sure there were any Picts around in 1000 AD.

The Vikings removed political anarchy? Somehow that doesn't go with the traditional Viking stereotype. The Vikings did travel far and wide though. They were sort of the Polynesians of the north.

Can't speak to the legitimacy of getting
"DNA strands from 1,000-year-old bone fragments" but DNA is now becoming mainstream in genealogy. I had my DNA done by FamilyTreeDNA and found an unknown (lost?)relative. What a rush.
Here is an article that speaks to DNA use for us amateurs http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_4144963

Isn't there an old Pink Floyd song called Grooving With The Picts"? No, but there was one called "Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict".
Although you have to stretch the meaning of the word "song" to cover it...

we proved that a large proportion of people on Orkney are descended from Vikings. Duh... but then again proof is proof, I guess.

I think we did that in college. But it was after a different test.

I thought the English disliked anyone not an Englishman.

Most Viking strerotypes were promulgated by the English their enemies. Sort of like if we asked around in the Middle East today for an accurate description of Americans. Vikings were technologically more advanced than mainland Europeans. That's how they dominated them in war and yes even "culture". English women appreciated that Viking men used combs and bathed often something it took awhile for the Englishmen to figure out.

Funny, I know that's RAH, but the first part sounds a bit like something from Archy and Mehitabel, by an author whose first name was Don, can't for the life of me remember his last name.
He was an early 20th century newsman/columnist.
