Would you be comfortable showering within 2 feet of a gay person of your sex? Accepting gays in the military is no different than having co-ed showers. That's just the opinion of this one time lowly enlisted soldier.
When I was in the Army in the '60's the guy would have been beat on, done some Stockade time, and then booted. If I remember correctly it was called 6,6, and a kick.

If you're a secure and mature person it shouldn't be a problem. That person in the shower, 2 feet away, is the same person he/she was when they were outside the shower door. The only thing that changes is that you are aware that they're gay. If that's uncomfortable it would appear that you have a problem, not the gay person showering next to you especially if no attempt is being made to seduce you. An overt gesture would be out of place, gay or straight.
