"Is this thievery supposed to be "conservative", giving people a hand-out because they have a child?"
Doesn't the over-riding national benefit enjoyed by encouraging families to bear children & offering them at least some small measure of support when they do pretty much trump the alternative of 'importing' the next generation of society?
Certainly, in a perfect philosophic conservative world, we wouldn't need things like 'school voucher programs' (which I wholeheartedly support!) but, until that day comes, pragmatic conservatives should rightly support any & all measures which frustrate the left's campaign to undermine traditional families & replace them with a far more easily controlled uneducated & often foreign lumpen-proletariate.

I'm thrilled with Stephen Harper to date, and expect to be even more pleased in the future!

Harper wants to give the money to families to choose their own child care plan. The Left wants the state to force families into one sized fits all plan. So there's already a philosophical difference in that conservatives respect families while the Left wants to replace them with the state.
