Mexico election too close to call (exit poll released)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential election is too close to call between a leftist anti-poverty campaigner and the conservative ruling party candidate locked in a tie, a respected exit poll said on Sunday.

The extremely close vote raised fears of a political crisis if any of the main candidates challenge the results and call street protests.

Pre-election polls had showed Felipe Calderon of the ruling party and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing former mayor of Mexico City, in a virtual tie. Exit polls from Mexico's two main television station and the El Universal newspaper said they could not declare a winner.

El Universal said the race was between Lopez Obrador and Calderon. Neither of the TV stations mentioned Roberto Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.

The Federal Electoral Institute was expected to announce official results at around 11 p.m. If it is unable to call a winner, Mexico could face days or weeks of legal wrangling and protests similar to the fight that followed the U.S. presidential election in 2000.

I hope so. There are some people who feel that Obrador would be a sort of Lula-like leftist. But the big difference is that Lula was essentially pre-Chavez, that is, he got in before Chavez consolidated his power and really began sticking his fingers in everything in LatAm. You know more about it since you live there, but from here, it looks to me as if Chavez has been heavily supporting Obrador and wants to be influential in Mexico, even though Obrador now seems to be trying to distance himself from ol Hugo baby.

There will be a bright side if the leftist wins. They need the poor to prop up their agenda which means they might do something on the border.

The ONLY way that we will EVER solve the crisis that is our Southern Border is Mexico FINALLY becoming a prosperous country.

If Mexico achieves an economy where it's citizens are able to earn enough money to live on WHY would they then attempt to travel on foot across a desert? The answer is they WON'T.

There is a reason why we don't have a CANADIAN illegal immigration problem. It's because in Canada, Candians can live the way they want too. It's not so in Mexico.

And beyond that, we don't want a committed leftist on our Southern border, given that Chavez would INSTANTLY have an ally 1000 miles closer to the US than before.

If Al'Rooters is saying "too close to call" it pretty much means Calderon won it.

You are correct

Al Rooters gave away their bias in the first sentence.

Lets see, there is the leftist " anti-poverty" campaigner versus the Conservative ruling party implied " keep the people in poverty" campaigner.

Thank goodness Calderon has probably won but we won't know that for sure until the 20th recount and after the 875 Al Rooter " how the election was stolen" by the Conservative party articles.

Do they do a run off election in Mexico if in the first time no one gets 50% of the popular votes?

Obrador/PRI caucus made an announcement just now, saying no statement from the candidate himself until 11 p.m. in Mexico City (two hours ahead of PST, I believe). They all looked glum, as did the candidate as he was being driven with a motorcycle escort through Mexico City streets.

No run-off. A simple majority takes the presidency.
