All work, no homes make `schlocks' leave the coop

Michael Mayo News Columnist June 1, 2006

Among the 110 people who wrote and called, I heard from a Weston mom who's moving to North Georgia, a former Broward teacher who moved to California and a Miami-Dade prosecutor whose last day is Friday before moving to Brevard County.

The consensus: Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle is "callous," "clueless" and "delusional" if he really thinks there is no affordable housing crunch in South Florida and the answer is simply for residents to work longer and harder.

"Tell Mr. Naugle `Bottoms up' from the proletariat," said Steve Nelson of Deerfield Beach, a mover who says he sometimes works 20 days straight "just to keep up with bills and rent."

The backstory

Sun SENTINEL

"Mayor Jim Naugle, a conservative and brash politician serving his final term, said people mistakenly think they're entitled to an affordable single-family house on a 40-hour work routine. They need to work more hours, and even then settle for a condo or townhouse, Naugle said.

"I'm supposed to subsidize some schlock sitting on the sofa and drinking a beer, who won't work more than 40 hours a week?'' he asked. "I deny that there is a problem. You can buy condos all day for $160,000.''

"The concept of this ordinance is from each according to his ability, to each according to need, which is the Communist Manifesto,'' said Naugle, who calls the proposed law a "luxury housing tax.''

"One person is working two or three jobs to get ahead and one person isn't. Should we tax the person that's working hard to get ahead, to pay for the one who isn't?'' he said.

I've lived in Ft Lauderdale for 50 years. Naugle is one of the best mayors we've ever had. Mayo, on the other hand, is a whining, hand-wringing liberal. Why our city commission (or anyone else) thinks anyone is "entitled" to "affordable housing" in a certain area is simply socialism. The city commission panders to the left. They are the worst bunch of commissioners in recent memory.

My fondest hope is that the Sun-Sentinel (Mayo's employer, and it's queer-dominated editorial board) takes it in the neck financially, just like most of the legacy media.

Mayo, the malcontent, is a perpetual whiner and lousy writer. He is certainly one of the worst columnists in the South and is typically to the left of Maureen Dowd. Naugle has been a decent Mayor and served Ft. Lauderdale well. Democrats hate the fact that Naugle is actually a Conservative who gets reelected because he maintains his status as a democrat.

"I deny that there is a problem. You can buy condos all day for $160,000."

Condos are all at least twice that amount in Northern Virginia.
