I met a young couple in the Marquesas from London who had made the voyage in an 18' home built sloop.

They became infested with cockroaches shortly after they arrived, so they pulled into a little cove and sank the boat at high tide. When the tide ebbed they shut the cocks and floated again when the tide came back.

The roaches were gone and they aired the boat out for a couple of days, reloaded and sailed on. Nice people and not foolish at all.

I once sailed a Coronado 15 from Santa Cruz to Monterrey and had lunch. It was getting dark when I headed back and the wind got very light. I pulled into Santa Cruz at 0200 hrs. It's fortunate that I was only the second type of person you listed.
