Mormon Faith to help Romney Out West

Though well-respected, Novak and his sources are not free from a challenge, so let me do the challenging.

Are Novak and his sources implying that the most morally conservative voters in the United States would rather endorse a left-wing, abortion-endorsing, socialist-leaning, gay agenda-adopting, Bill Clinton-marrying, liberal than a God-fearing, card-carrying conservative Mormon, who has had remarkable success in business and in politics, and who has shown he is able to win a liberal state like Massachusetts? Either something is very wrong with Novak or something is very wrong with the Evangelicals he is interviewing.

I'll vote for the most conservative candidate presented to me.

Romney doesn't strike me as particularly conservative, but he is probably more conservative than any Democrat likely to be running next election.

His religion isn't a concern to me. Again, he couldn't possibly be as alien to me as whatever and whoever the Dems decide to run.

Romney's challenge is that he won't make it to the nomination, and thats because of the fact that, in the primaries, he's not up against Dems, he's up against Repubs, and in that contest he probably isn't the most conservative voice out there.

So, not to count him out, he's not my man. But if he were the nominee, he would get my vote. The only Repub I would refuse to vote for is McCain.

The Voting Age Population in Nevada includes hundreds of thousands of non-citizens, here legally or illegally. The state also has a large transient population which is not likely to vote or care about public issues.

It's not hard to imagine a civic-minded, fully-American minority voting way out of proportion to its share of the population.

You see similar ratios of share of voters:share of population among Jewish communities, which are also often found in states with huge immigrant and "don't care" transient populations (New York, California, and Florida).

>>I wouldn't vote for Romney in a primary

I’m a Mormon, and I don’t know that I would vote for him in a Primary, either.

I’d like someone more conservative It’s not like we are electing him Pope (a little religion humor here), I’d like to see someone better suited to handling the WOT the Borders, and the economy, maybe a businessman who lost a family member on 9/11, who understands the cost of open borders. As long as he’s got good Christian values, and is following his beliefs unabashedly, he’s got my vote.

As for Hillary, she’s got to be the most polarizing person in politics today, I don’t see her as electable, but I’d love to see her run (best way to guarantee she goes away).

that is especially true about Jewish voters....

the thing about black voters, a lot of Jewish voters and other groups is that they do indeed deliver a set amount of votes that a canidate can actually count on......

just think, someday, white Christians will be a minority and perhaps then, politicians will come a'courtin'....and actually listen to us.....LOL

But to counter my original point, I would not put it past a Mormon-oriented group to fudge the numbers and give an unusually high estimate. Minority groups always exaggerate their numerical influence because it is essential to get attention. We've been hearing for years there are "6 or 7 million Muslims" in the United States which is a vast overestimate.

That says something.

I suspect a lot of that can be squarely blamed on Memphis and the surrounding area. Nashville and Clarksville tend to be a bit more to the right.

Second, the south will probably turn away from him simply because he is a Mormon. Him being a mormon doesn't make we want to not vote for him, it only makes me not want to go to church with him.

In my opinion (assuming Hillary wins the democrat nomination), she'll need a southern governor on her ticket. I think she'll persuade the democrat governor from TN to join her.

LOL! You talking about Mr. excitement, Phil Bredesen? snicker snicker...

We all think independently, but it will turn off a great portion of southerners.

I know this will sound very strange, but Nevada turn out numbers ARE typically closer to the 30% range since everybody is a transplant and they tend not to vote as much since they don't know who the people are who are running. And Mormons do vote in extraordinarily high numbers, even higher than union members. Now, they are being essentially told who to vote for and that voting is a civic duty but I'm cool with that since they invariably vote GOP. Mormons are already as right wing as the most right wing evangelical already. There is no political division there - just a theological one.

I do believe that Romney will not have a real chance to be the nominee for two main reason: LDS faith which is largely non understood outside of UT/NV and his ability to get elected in Mass. which is a deal-killer for virtually all Southern and Western States. How can somebody win in Kennedy country and still be tolerable to Wyoming? The Answer: It hasn't ever happened yet.

>>he is young and healthy, he is a financial wizard and people just like him. Certainly, Ronald Reagan has very little over this chap.

Who writes this tripe? I hate it when liberals and liberal apologists in the news media tell conservatives who the best candidate is.

I am Mormon. I would vote for Reagan over Mitt any day. They are not even in the same league.

>>A few appearances with the likes of Johnny Miller, Donny Osmond, Gladys Knight, Steve Young, Pat Buchanan’s sister Bay Buchanan and other prominent LDS folk will quickly put the religious conservative masses at ease.

Huuuhh??? This assumes most Mormons are dolts who don’t understand conservative politics.

>>If it did, can you imagine America’s image after-the-fact? Ouch. And we thought Iran and China were unaccepting of religious diversity.

The underlying message here. Southern Christians are religious bigots who are on par with the murdering regimes of Iran and China. I find this characterization offensive.

>>But let’s assume the wacky far-far right wing convince their faithful that Romney is growing horns in his head.

Most Mormons are part of the “wacky far-far right wing” this author alludes to.

>>Consider the recent scourge and embarrassment occurring in Las Vegas politics. Once the corrupt politicians were thrown out of office, the electorate replaced them with Mormons. Why? Because Mormons have shown over time they are trustworthy in office. Not perfect, but at least trustworthy.

Doesn’t the Harry Reid example invalidate this argument? Most trustworthy Mormons I know would not run for office.

>>the recent pro-marriage initiatives in liberal states like Hawaii, Oregon and California.

Credit due. At least the author got one point correct. This was encouraged by the Church not a single candidate. The Church won’t “endorse” Mitt. Thankfully it will continue supporting the Family.

>>Ninety-five or so percent of Mormons are also Republicans.
I’ve heard different numbers than this before. Many Mormons are Republican. But I have personally met many Constitutionalist and Conservative Mormons. Does any one have any good statistics about this and the “other” parties?

>>you start to see the true picture of why Romney is the best candidate for the Republican Party.

Real Reason this author endorses Mitt…. Liberals don’t want to get smacked down by a true Conservative.

I agree with everything you say excpet one point I'd like to clarify if I may.

I have never ever been told who to vote for by the Church. I don't know any Mormons who ever have. They do tell us to fulfill our civic responsibilty and vote for who we feel is best.

It amazes me still that I meet Mormons who characterize themselves as liberals. There aren't many but a few in each of the places I've lived. Oh yeah and Seattle seemed to have more than its share.

Don't discount him as a VP candidate though. He would sell well to independents and moderates and could make a strong conservative presidential nominee more appealing to voters.

Romney gets a smear because he is a liberal Republican and getting sick and tired of Mormans trying to say otherwise. I don't like Romney's stance on issues and all of a sudden I am then going to be accused of not supporting him because he is Morman.

Speaking as a Mormon who is a political conservative, I happen to agree that Romney looks too "liberal" for my tastes. (I put "liberal" in quotes because most people who are called that are really Leftists. But I digress.) Although I would vote for him over any candidate the Democrats are likely to put forth, I would prefer a more conservative Republican.

However, I disagree with you that Mormons are pushing the line that voters won't support Romney because of his religion. That seems to be coming mostly from pundits who are not themselves LDS. In some cases, I suspect that their motive in saying such things is to smear evangelical Christians as "intolerant."
