San Francisco crowds mark quake centennial at break of dawn

Evoking the city's can-do spirit, Mayor Gavin Newsom called San Francisco a city of dreamers and doers, as he and an estimated 5,000 onlookers marked the 100th anniversary of the Great Quake just at the break of dawn today.

Sending a national message, as network television cameras captured the event, Newsom said San Francisco's rebuilding efforts 100 years ago are ``a shining light and example'' for hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. Added Newsom, ``Don't tell me we can't rebuild.''

``It's like New York on New Year's Eve,'' said Sonia Picone of San Francisco, as a big spotlight lit up Lotta's Fountain, the scene of the pre-dawn ceremony.

But the celebratory spirit was not lost: ``Go out and have some fun, the bars open at 6,'' Conroy counseled.

Added Newsom, ``Don't tell me we can't rebuild.''

But you obviously don't need our military to help you rebuild.

But how did the quake affect the Homosexual Community? Shouldn't there be a Gay Earthquake museum someplace?

Let me guess: Half of the 5,000 gathered were dressed in clothing appropriate to the opposite gender. (The rest were nude.)

After our '89 quake, I had to move out for six months to repair the damage to my house, which is half a mile from the epicenter. I moved back in on April 17th. The next morning, the anniversary of '06, I was rolled out of bed by a 5.6 quake which was followed by about 35 others, a "swarm" that went on for over three hours. Some "welcome home" for me. It was surreal.

``Go out and have some fun, the bars open at 6,''

And you can do anything you want there except smoke a cigarette.

``Go out and have some fun, the bars open at 6,'' Disgusting, nice way to mark a national tragedy.

does anybody know why so many homosexuals are in San Francisco? What caused them to move there?

Goes all the way back to the 49'ers and the Gold Rush days.

San Francisco was lawless where anything goes, even more so than New Orleans.

...from the History Channel.

One thing I've never understood:

How DID SF rebuild, back before there was FEMA and other gummint handouts?

(And if you know the answer, don't tell me, tell Ray "Willie Wonka" Nagin...)

A lot the 49ers were people who were already less savory members of society, and San Francisco was also a port city as well.

In the 1840s-1860s convicts and sailors spent more time away from women and in close quarters with each other than any other segments of society.

It works like an immigration cluster.

and yet you still appear to live there (?!?!?)
Do you take realty advice from New Orleans residents?

Not attacking you I just don't understand how people can live in an area that is detrimental to their mental (via lib policies) and physical (via quakes, floods, fire, etc) well being.

Earthquakes are quite different from hurricanes, etc. Hurricanes and tornadoes can strike every year, year after year. Right after the quake I talked to a geologist who told me that I would never see another epicenter at this spot in my lifetime.

That's the difference.

SF Repub -

Don't know if you got a chance to watch the "parade" - hid my burning desire to yell "YOU @#$%^& $UCK!" when Pelosi came by. For what it's worth, the firefighters got the biggest ovation (my building is right at Lotta's Fountain on Market Street, where the crowds gathered this a.m.)

Oddly, it was one of the "liberal" people in my office who said "it's not exactly the type of thing you have a PARADE for, is it?" And I said - no.
