Voting has ended on the second and final day of Italy's bitterly contested general election.

Polling stations closed at 1500 (1300 GMT) and partial results are expected in the next few hours.

According to exit polls, centre-left leader Romano Prodi is on course to beat Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

A Nexus poll shown on Italian TV put Mr Prodi's coalition on 50-54% in both houses of parliament, with Mr Berlusconi's coalition on 45-49%.

Italy was there for us when it counted.

And as they say in Italy, "If you don't like the government here, give it a few days."
