Jack Abramoff: No Derogatory Information on Tom DeLay
The National Ledger ^ | 03-25-06 | Robert Novak

Posted on 03/25/2006 12:06:29 AM PST by Coastal

WASHINGTON -- Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff has advised friends that he has no derogatory information about former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and is not implicating him as part of his plea bargain with federal prosecutors.

Abramoff's guilty plea on fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy charges requires him to provide evidence about members of Congress. That led to speculation that this would mean trouble for DeLay, who faces money laundering and conspiracy charges in Texas.

Timing, Howlin.... it's all about timing. (I learned that from watching the excruciatingly patient Karl Rove for the past five years.) Sometimes I forget that not everybody is a political junkie like us freepers. The fact is, that great big clueless "Jay-walking" rabble that determines election winners won't start paying attention until about September. THAT's when the "good news" should start flowing like a spigot.

....He said, with fingers crossed.

per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Daschle:
2005 and beyond
Daschle has not made intentions clear as to whether or not he will run again for office; however, he has signed on as an advisor to lobbying firm Alston & Bird and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

In late September of 2005, Daschle caught the attention of the media by reactivating his political action committee, changing its name from DASHPAC to New Leadership for America PAC and procuring a speaking slot at the Iowa Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner. He has continued to keep a relatively high profile among Democratic interest groups. These moves are widely interpreted by the media as an exploration of a potential 2008 presidential candidacy. Daschle has said that he will not run for Governor of South Dakota in 2006, and he has ruled out any future bid for U.S. Senate.

On February 13, 2006, Daschle became one of two Democrats (with Rep. Jane Harman of California) to endorse a controversial domestic surveillance program conducted under the authority of President George W. Bush by the NSA.

I wonder who he DOES have information on.

From Novak's column:

However, Abramoff has not given a clean bill of health to any other congressman -- including Rep. Robert Ney, who has stepped down as chairman of the House Administration Committee. Ney was the only member of Congress named in court papers connected with Abramoff's guilty plea Jan. 4.

Alston & Bird is a law firm, and Deeply Saddened Daschle isn't a lawyer. He probably technically can't be a partner, so they gave him a nice title: Special Policy Advisor. It's just a fancy way of saying lobbyist. From his bio on the firm's website:

Senator Tom Daschle is Special Policy Advisor in Alston & Bird’s Washington, D.C. office and is a member of the Legislative and Public Policy Group. As a non-attorney, Senator Daschle focuses his services on advising the firm’s clients on issues related to all aspects of public policy with a particular emphasis on issues related to financial services, health care, energy, telecommunications and taxes. In addition, he advises on trade and international matters.
