Steve Rauschenberger's blunder

Double entendre?

Republican lieutenant governor candidate Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin got in hot water with the Elk Grove Township GOP over the weekend.

The key Northwest suburban Republican group voted Sunday to rescind its endorsement of Rauschenberger in the March 21 primary.

The senator spoke to the group Saturday, praising longtime Cook County Board member Carl Hansen of Mount Prospect. When the Elk Grove party types returned home, they found out Rauschenberger also had sent out a letter endorsing Hansen’s foe, Hanover Township Highway Commissioner Tim Schneider.

Rauschenberger’s Senate colleague, appointed Sen. Cheryl Axley, who doubles as Elk Grove GOP chairman, called him a hypocrite.

“His actions demonstrate a complete lack of teamwork and the potential for similar actions in public office. The strength of our organization is built on ethics and integrity. And with that, we have withdrawn our support and endorsement of Steve Rauschenberger,” Axley said in a statement.

Rauschenberger released a statement of his own saying he’s long been on record as supporting Schneider. The senator said the Republicans present at the meeting “misconstrued the deferential and respectful remarks I made at the meeting about Carl’s service to the GOP and on the County Board to be an endorsement of him in the upcoming primary.”

One of the criticisms of Rauschenberger from some Republicans is that he tries to be too cute. Those who hold that view will chalk up the Elk Grove endorsement imbroglio as further evidence.

Looks like Rauschenberger's in trouble. Anybody go to this event over the weekend and can give us more stuff.

I'm still not sure who I'm going to vote for but Sandy Wedgeman is looking better right now.

So a politician kisses the a$$ of another politician who's running against a third politician who the first politician has endorsed --

Is the complaint that there was too much ass-kissing, not that there was ass-kissing without subsequent cuddling and commitment?

It's just that he's saying or supposedly saying at one place he is being nice to one candidate and supporting another. The GOP up there was seeing his positive comments as an endorsement. I just thought it was funny that's all.

I thought it was funny in that it was the kind of thing only a couple of politicians would have a spat over.

This is the first I've heard of her, since she is new to the senate and not from my neck of the woods.

From a little research:

She has been Elk Grove Township clerk since 2003.
She is Elk Grove Township GOP committman.
She was appointed by the county organization to the senate last fall when the incumbant resigned to enter the private sector.

Given her background, she's most likely close to Hansen. Looking at her website and voting record, I can't really tell where she stands ideologically. Her township organization has endorsed Topinka for governor, so make of that what you will.

Hansen has been on the board for 32 years and, as far as I know, is well-respected. He's been endorsed by the local papers. But he was challenged by Schneider before, and there was a rather byzantine element to that race that I don't quite have a handle on. It looks like Rauschenberger might have struck a raw nerve among Hansen's supporters.

Gotta love the parochial politics. Sadly, Rausch jumped the shark when he opted to run for Lt Gov instead. He's nothing but a lemming to me now.

Sandy Wedgeman is running for Lt Gov. She is doing nothing but chanting slogans - "Me pro-life, me pro-family value, other people George Ryan RINOs".

In fact, that is how the other candidates are running their campaigns. Blago, despite low approval ratings, has benefited from IL GOP ineptness. Il tends to run contrary to the rest of the nation. If IL Dems do great, then the GOP does well nationally. Hopefully, the same trend will happen this year.
