Wiggles named top Australian export

Four men in colourful T-shirts and a backup cast that includes a spotted dinosaur called Dorothy have been named Australia's Exporter of the Year.

Last year the Wiggles sold more than 17 million DVDs and videos and five million CDs around the world.

The children's entertainers beat banks, airlines and mining multinationals to take the top honour in the government-sponsored annual award ceremony.

The Wiggles' Exporter of the Year award was one of 10 business gongs presented at the 42nd Australian Export Awards.

The Wiggles' export business now includes television rights, franchises and a licence deal with Walt Disney.

Other winners at the awards included food supplier Mulwarra Export, Central Queensland University, forensic instrument company Rolfin Australia, prime lamb exporter WAMMCO, and Qantas.

Fifteen years ago, the four Wiggles members were pre-school teachers in Sydney, Australia, who played part time in rock bands, while attempting to establish a market for their homespun recordings of children's music.

All that is light years away from their current dozen gold albums and position as the highest-grossing entertainers in Australia, out-selling fellow Antipodean natives, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.

I discovered the Wiggles five years ago when my daughter was two.

They are terrific. "Beatles for toddlers" is an apt description, and one that I have used for years to describe them.

My daughter has outgrown them, obviously, but their stuff is really great for toddlers and young children.

The Wiggles are more talented and creative. Perhaps there is justice.

My daughter love these guys. If'n ya ask me, they beat the heck out of 'em watching the "Boobahs" or the "Teletubbies" or "Barney." Unfortunately, my daughters like them, too (gagging sound).

My son has several of their DVDs. They're very talented, and not egregiously PC like most kids' shows. Good on 'em.

They're very talented, and not egregiously PC like most kids' showsExactly why ther're so successful in my opinion. My 2 year old daughter was watching their Christmas DVD, and lo and behold, they were actually singing songs about the birth of Jesus. For that alone, I like them and will continue to buy their products for her.

Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy.

The Wiggles rock, they love what they do and are good at it.

Teletubbies, OTOH, are the Devil.

We've got lots of Wiggles dvd's, vhs's, toys and the like. We have 3 daughters - ages 5, 3, and 19mos and they ALL like the songs and the dancing. The baby actually gets excited when we put on a Wiggles video for her. A couple of the videos - like "Cold Spaghetti Western" have good clean comedy that parents can enjoy.

There's a bevy of entertainment for kids that is WORSE than the Wiggles - attitudes, content, etc. An example is the "Bratz" dolls. We don't allow any "Bratz" items in the house. We have a Wiggles Christmas video that has a MANGER SCENE in it (w/Jesus), they call it Christmas.

One thing that I have noticed is that whenever they talk about food, songs about food, eating food, it's never a meat item - fruit, spaghetti, vegetables, breads.

Hey entertainment moguls - are you reading this? Clean entertainment sells.

I love these guys! No sarcasm. No innuendo/double-meaning/irony. Just good clean fun for kids. They also talk about...gasp... Christmas!! And sing carols that mention...gasp...Jesus...(faints).

I'm sorry to all the Wiggles supporters, but when I see them, the Gaydar is pinging loudly.

But they are all married....to women. I guess they are just "gay" in the old-fashioned way, they're just very happy.

I'd pay good money for a deathmatch between Henry the Octopus and Dorothy the Dinosaur.

That's good to know...There's just something unusual about four guys hanging around each other, being that "happy."

To me, they're just as annoying as the Teletubbies.
