Israel urges UN ouster for 'clear and present danger' Iran

JERUSALEM : Israel urged Iran's ouster from the United Nations and said it posed a "clear and present danger", after the Islamic republic's hardline president called Wednesday for the Jewish state to wiped off the map.

"This call contravenes the United Nations charter and is tantamount to a crime against humanity," said Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

"We must submit a clearcut request to the UN secretary general (Kofi Annan) and the Security Council to obtain Iran's expulsion from the United Nations," he wrote in an open letter to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

"It is inconceivable for a man calling for genocide to be at the head of a member country of the United Nations," said Peres.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking at a joint press conference with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, said it was clear that Iran was trying to develop an atomic weapons capability.

"Israel belives that Iran is very close to developing a nuclear bomb. And we think that the Iranians are trying to buy time," Shalom said, describing the Islamic republic as "a clear and present danger".

"That is why all parties should be very determined to move the Iranian file to the (UN) Security Council, otherwise Iran will continue to develop nuclear bombs."

If anyone thinks Israel WON'T act, if we or the UN do not, they are DEAD wrong!

The only way to stop Iran without war is to send arms to the Arab separatists who live in their oil rich western border lands. Without oil, they are nothing.

Why we (or Israel) haven't completely wiped out Iran's military and nuclear capabilities is totally beyond me.

It's times like this when I wish we could clone Ronald Reagan and put him back in the White House. Do you think Iran would be any more than a pile of sand if he was in power?

...the Islamic republic's hardline president called Wednesday for the Jewish state to be wiped off the map.

I'll bet that if Israel were to issue a similar statement regarding Iran that most of the nations of the UN would immediately call for the expulsion of Israel from the UN for issuing such an irresponsible and inflammatory statement.

Well, that's not very politically correct of Iran's president, saying stuff like that, is it now?

Actually Reagan backed down in Lebanon and we really should have had a war with Iran because of their violation of diplomatic status of our embassy workers - plainly an act of war. As much as I like and respect Ronnie, he screwed the pooch on those two counts.

Well maybe, Reagan hit Ghadaffi over Lockerbie, but the Marine barracks bombing went unanswered. Even RR was fettered by Geopolitical hooey!

I think rather than engage in useless calling for expulsion of Iran from United Nations (the organization full of Islamic Terrorist Sponsors or their fans anyway), Israel should simply conduct an air raid on all suspected Iranian Nuclear facilities as a justified act of self-defence.

The open call by president of one country to wipe out of existence another country without any threats and provocations from that other country is pretty much an act of war as far as I'm concerned. This is not a call by some waco IslamoNazi, or Wahhabi Mullah during Friday Prayers. This is not a speech by some lunatic Jew hater. It's a call by the head of the state with the large army behind him and possibly the capabilities to produce and deliver nuclear weapons. So air raid will be more than justified--it will be an act of self-defence.

Reagan was playing a bigger game at the time. The Soviet Union was the foe to beat. Today Iran is one of the great threats, no doubt about it.

Well let's look at the facts. He pulled out of Lebanon, calling it a mistake and not our problem. Was furious at Begin for invading Lebanon. Sold the AWACS to Saudi Arabia, and had formed a working relationship with the major Islamic players in the Middle East.

I'd say that if he were in the White House it would be very unlikely that we'd be in Iraq right now, and equally likely that we never would have been attacked on 9/11.

"This call contravenes the United Nations charter and is tantamount to a crime against humanity," said Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

In his next statement Peres said Iran's comment was a sign of progress in the road map. < /s>

Israel must destroy Iran's nuclear facilities if it wants to survive.

The question is: does Israel still want to survive?
